Page move and recent edits

[edit]

Page moves and edits that might be considered controversial should be discussed here first, before implementing them. Lemionis, you seem to very knowledgeable on this subject, so your contributions would be considered very valuable, as long as you source your information to reliable sources. I've reverted the recent move to "Kaseme", because the first source I looked at (the BBC) uses the spelling "al Qasimi" for the rulers of Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah. I've added the source to the article. Please do not add information without providing references. Night w (talk) 13:23, 18 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistency in spelling

[edit]

Like many transliterated Arabic names, there is inconsistency in the spellings of the Al Qasimi dynasty among the various articles on its members, as well as which re-directs are created and which are not. Has there been a discussion of an "official" spelling that we should adopt in WP?

At this time, all the following capitalization/hyphenation/spelling combinations are present:

al Qasimi

  • Saud bin saqr al qasimi
  • Saud bin Saqr
  • Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi

al-Qassimi

  • Saqr ibn Muhammad al-Qasimi
  • Saqr bin Muhammad al-Qasimi

Al Qassimi

  • Khalid Al-Qassimi
  • Khalid AlQassimi
  • Khalid al-Qassimi

Al Qasimi

  • Sheikh Khalid bin Saqr Al-Qassimi
  • Sheikh Khalid bin Saqr Al Qasimi
  • Sheikh Lubna Khalid Sultan al Qasimi
  • Lubna Khalid Sultan al Qasimi
  • Shaikha Lubna al Qasimi
  • Lubna al Qasimi
  • Lubna al qasimi
  • Lubna Al Qasimi
  • Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi
  • Sultan Bin Saqr Al Qasimi
  • House of Al Qasimi
  • Qawasim
  • Kaseme
  • Al Qawasim

Al-Qasimi

  • Sultan ibn Muhammad Al-Qasimi
  • Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi
  • Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi

FWIW, I created the template {{SaQ}} to make wikilinking to articles of this dynasty easier (before realizing the variation in spelling). It currently supports all the known variants, though it would be easier on editors if they didn't have to remember them.

So, how do people feel about cleaning up some of this? I'll note that the way I read Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Arabic#Definite article, the suggested form is "al-Qasimi" (as far as un-cap'ing of Al and hyphenation, that is). —[AlanM1(talk)]— 13:40, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In the case of al-Qasimi, the definite article should be used. The name literally means "the Qasimite" as opposed to "House of Qasim" which would have been written آل قاسم in Arabic. The definite article is what is used in the Arabic articles on WP, and since Qasimi is an adjective it makes a lot more sense to use the definite article. The question is: does the Al/al- mean "House of = آل " (Al) or "the = ال " (al-) ?
Abjiklam say that it's "the". To my eyes, the Arabic script in the English language Wikipedia and the Arabic article names agree, at least for the main article (I have not checked the individual articles). So despite the family being a dynasty, Arabic speakers apparently did not choose "House of" for this dynasty. Boud (talk) 19:41, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Boud, you are right there is no آل in this case in the Arabic form of the word. Then al- seems to be proper.Egeymi (talk) 19:46, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
