EP?

[edit]

I think the bit about the EP needs tightening up. I have heard that an EP was planned in connection with "Yellow Submarine", but presumably it was the four new songs in the film ("All Together Now"; "Only A Northern Song"; "Hey Bulldog"; "It's All Too Much"). Is there a source which says "Across the Universe" (which was not in the film) was supposed to be on the EP too?

This comes from the two Lewisohn Books I'll add the details when I get a chance. simonthebold 10:34, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jai guru deva om

[edit]

Ummm...why isn't it ever stated what "Jai guru deva om" means? Elfred 15:00, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It means nothing. It's a mantra. The sound is used by the person chanting to aid in meditation. Troyvarsity 11:19, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There was a Wiki article on the phrase detailing what each of the words mean but it appears to have been deleted. Each of the words mean something (guru and om obviously have articles on here) but I don't think the phrase as such means anything specific although it does roughly translate into English making some sort of sense but I can't remember the translation. I'm not sure if it was a mantra Lennon was given or if he just strung the words together himself. It might have been handy if before deleting the Jai Guru Deva Om article somebody had copied the main info over to this page. MarkB79 17:47, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I belive I read somewhere that it means "gratitude to the divine teacher" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.53.72.31 (talk) 01:20, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I remember hearing a snippet about it in the All Together Now article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.122.63.142 (talk) 19:10, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The "literal meaning" which is "approximated" (and sourced to a dead link) is simply incorrect, and the idea that the mantra has many possible meanings unnecessarily complicates the issue. "Hail the divine guru" is an accurate literal translation. Jaya literally means victory. Gurudeva is often used in devotional chants to one's teacher, and should probably be considered a single word basically meaning "holy guru." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.147.186.61 (talk) 16:43, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

White Album Reference

[edit]

This statement, "his White Album contributions were much more angry and hard-edged." I question the validity of inclusion of this. Seems like just an unsubstantiated opinion. What is it about "Julia" that seems more hard-edged? Recommend it be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.217.166.84 (talk) 01:41, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:WorldCov.jpg

[edit]

Image:WorldCov.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Infobox overload

[edit]

Does this article really need four infoboxes? Seems like overkill to me.--Pawnkingthree (talk) 23:29, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I removed them. At most, we could use Template:Extra track listing for Anthology 2 and Let It Be... Naked. — John Cardinal (talk) 02:49, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since Allmusic have changed the syntax of their URLs, 1 link(s) used in the article do not work anymore and can't be migrated automatically. Please use the search option on http://www.allmusic.com to find the new location of the linked Allmusic article(s) and fix the link(s) accordingly, prefereably by using the {{Allmusic}} template. If a new location cannot be found, the link(s) should be removed. This applies to the following external links:

McCartney's "subconscious sabotage" of the song

[edit]

Lennon's 1980 interview is published in book form and doesn't appear to be available online so I can't verify this. But the exact same quote is claimed to have been made by Lennon about McCartney relating to "Strawberry Fields Forever" and is related in the wiki article on that song. I found substantiation elsewhere online regarding the Strawberry Fields accusation, but it appears that this specific claim regarding Across the Universe was mistakenly taken from Lennon's accusations against McCartney regarding Strawberry Fields. 24.5.70.184 (talk) 23:48, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The reference can be found in statements on p. 162 of The Playboy Interviews with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Lennon makes a series of statements that are really quite suspicious, including "Paul would ... sort of subconsciously try and destroy a great song." Then he goes on to say "well maybe I'm paranoid", etc. Then Lennon goes on to say to the interviewer "The same thing happened to "Across the Universe"". A problem with Lennon, more than the other Beatles (or George Martin, etc.) is that spoke off the top of his head, and at that point in the interview, it's particularly obvious. 76.102.1.129 (talk) 16:24, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And Lennon was not only at loggerheads with McCartney at that time over a number of issues, but was heavily into repudiating the whole ‘Beatle’ part of his life, as though someone had ‘forced’ him to do it. He even attacked George Martin for ‘messing up’ his early songs with ‘electronic tricks’. I have a copy of ‘Lennon Remembers’, the Rolling Stone interviews. Too much of it is angry rant. 2001:44B8:3102:BB00:5C56:6649:E8C4:E488 (talk) 21:52, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced changes

[edit]

I suppose that anonymous user @2.102.12.101: has all the best intentions when he/she added the following line to this article: "VeteranBBC Radio 2 DJ and presenter, Chris Evans announced that this was his favourite song." Why did John Lennon write the words "Nothings gonna change my world?" Is it the nothingness your mind is supposed to achieve through meditation or the exasperation of being married to someone you don't love?

Why highlight Fiona Apple?

[edit]

Having a section for Bowie’s cover makes sense since Lennon was involved, but why does Fiona Apple’s deserve more attention than any of the others? Doesn’t appear to have won an award or anything. ZimZalaBim talk 22:43, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
