Common name?

[edit]

Doesn't the common name hook-thorn refer to this tree? Not sure, though. 41.247.136.219 (talk) 14:01, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, the hook-thorn is the less well distributed but related Acacia caffra from which incidentally the elegant long-stemmed Xhosa tobacco pipes are made. The thorns of this tree do not shed as easily as A. Karroo, the flowers are a paler yellow and fluffier while the pods are straight as opposed to sickle-shaped in A. Karroo. On the subject of names, I doubt whether the Afrikaans name for A. Karroo is indeed the Doringboom as indicated. It is rather Soetdoring (trans, sweet thorn). A doringboom in Afrikaans is a generic term for any thorn tree, not A. Karroo specifically. 41.11.168.141 (talk) 16:56, 9 July 2010 (UTC) Conservation Status The status is incorrect - it is NOT vulnerable; this is most likely the Southern African tree with the widest distribution and certainly does not belong in any of the 'threatened' categories. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.135.76.73 (talk) 03:24, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this species listed as vulnerable? It is not in the red list and is a very common and widespread species. Surely it is least concern. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Punkadelic (talkcontribs) 13:50, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect synonym?

[edit]

Acacia campbellii Arn. is, as far as I can tell, not a synonym for this species, but is a different species native to India. comment added by Punkadelic (talk) 09:07, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
