Ambiguity

[edit]

This sentence is ambiguous: "In 2017, a combined 38.3 million viewers watched Trump's inaugural address across the same networks, according to Nielsen data, representing a 4% increase in raw television viewership."

At face value, it would appear to mean that Trump's inaugural viewership was 4% greater than Obama's in 2013 (or Obama's in 2009, or perhaps even Biden's in 2021, though that would make the least sense). This would appear to be a textbook example of a "misplaced modifier." It is implied Trump's inaugural viewership was a 4% increase as compared to some other president's inaugural viewership, presumably the most recent preceding Trump's inauguration (Obama's in 2013), when in fact, the increase in viewership is a result of comparing Biden's inauguration to Trump's, Biden's inaugural viewership seeing the increase. Of course, it goes without saying that a comparison between Biden's and Trump's inaugural viewerships is far more relevant to an article on Biden's inauguration than a comparison between Trump's and Obama's inaugural viewerships, but the sentence is structured in a manner that does not make it clear which inaugural viewerships are being compared. Even when you logically arrive at the correct pairing for comparison (Trump's and Biden's), the increase would still be attributed to the wrong inauguration due to the misplaced modifier. This should be fixed, but the article is locked, so I request an edit from someone able. Thank you. 66.91.36.8 (talk) 19:56, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Pence

[edit]

I've done a Find on this page for "Pence", because I expected that there would be commentary on the fact that Mike Pence did in fact attend the inauguration, and met with his successor, Kamala Harris, on the day as a symbolic facilitation of of the peaceful transfer of power and the acceptance of the election results.

Given that his attendance was so significant because Trump himself did not attend, shouldn't there be at least some mention of this? 92.20.150.143 (talk) 08:07, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
