- Lead
- "took part in play-offs" - in the body, it says "took part in the play-offs"
- "competed for the final place for the 1998–99 season in the Second Division" - repetition; you already said above that we were determining the fourth and final team to gain promotion
- "the ball struck the arm of Jon Gittens to concede a penalty" - the ball conceded a penalty?
- Route to the final
- the play-offs -> the play-offs
- "Liam Robinson was then sent off..." - slightly repetitive, as the previous sentence also said "was then"
- "the match ended 4–1 to Torquay who advanced..." - maybe a comma after Torquay?
- "the first leg was held at Underhill on 11 May 1998" - need to make clear who the home team is here.
- "were shown a red card for violent conduct" - it feels slightly odd that we're linking red card here, even though there was a sending off mentioned in the Torquay section.
- Actually, on that note, is there any reason why Colchester's route to the final is shown after Torquay's? In the infobox they're listed first, and were also higher in the league table.
- Background
- " to progress past the semi-finals losing on aggregate..." - maybe a comma after "semi-finals"?
- "They had played in the fourth tier of English football after gaining promotion from non-League football, winning the Football Conference in 1992 ahead of Wycombe Wanderers on goal difference. Colchester had last played in the third tier in the 1980–81 season" - since this detail is included, it sounds like there's a bit missing here. They were in the third tier, then they were in non-league, so they must have been in the fourth tier too at some point before their non-league stint. If that something about that can be added without being too verbose, then it might be beneficial.
- Link Penalty shoot-out (association football), and probably add a hyphen, since that's what the article does.
- "having gained promotion on one occasion" - make clear that this is gaining promotion via the play-offs, rather than by any other means (assuming that is what it means).
- Summary
- "McFarlane scored but the goal was disallowed for offside" - minor point, but if the goal was disallowed then he didn't really score, did he...
- "Neil Gregory was unmarked in the Torquay penalty area but shot wide" - it sounds like this is still part of the penalty narrative. Maybe add a time or somethign, to make clear that it's a separate incident.
- "3 yards (2.7 m)" - the old precision chestnut again!
- "Soon after the interval Simon Betts struck a shot from around 25 yards (23 m) which almost crept under Gregg's body but rolled out for a corner" - I can't quite visualise this. If it almost crept under Gregg's body, then presumably it didn't actually creep under his body. But how did it then roll for a corner? Did it deflect off him and go behind or something?
- "Gibbs had appeared to foul David Gregory" - according to whom?
- "A shot from Gibbs was then deflected wide, Gittens headed over the bar and Jack shot wide" - all in the same move?!
- Post-match
- Any quotes from Kevin Hodges?
- I'd probably mention Colchester's next-season placing first, given that they were the winning side and also listed first. And make clear whether they were relegated or not.
- Likewise, probably indicate whether Torquay's 20th place was a relegation one or not.
@The Rambling Man:That's about it for the first pass. Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 13:25, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

- Great, all looks fine and dandy. I've checked the refs too, they all seem valid and formatted. Promoting to GA. — Amakuru (talk) 18:29, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
