- ... that a penalty shootout was used to determine which side would host the replay of the 1988 Football League Third Division play-off Final?
5x expanded by The Rambling Man (talk). Self-nominated at 09:15, 16 April 2021 (UTC).
- Nice work The Rambling Man! The article was expanded more than 5xs, is within policy, and was nominated in the time frame required by DYK policy. The hook length is fine, and the hook fact is verified to the cited source. This hook can be promoted.4meter4 (talk) 20:04, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
Infobox
[edit]In the infobox, is it not normal to list the home team in any match first? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:08, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- Which is the home team? The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 07:09, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- The first leg was played on Bristol City's ground so I would expect to see Bristol City listed first.
- The second leg was played on Walsall's ground so I would expect to see Walsall listed first.
- The replay was played on Walsall's ground so I would expect to see Walsall listed first.
- Of course, I know nothing about the requirements for articles about football matches, but as the article stands, each match is listed in the infobox in the exact opposite way of what I would expect. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:28, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- I see what you mean. Switched around. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 09:33, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Lead
[edit]- ....season in 24th and last position in the Second Division and were relegated back to the Third Division. - There seems to be two "ands" in this sentence so maybe you could split that sentence into which is a possibility.
Route to the Final
[edit]- Sheffield United had finished the 1987–88 season in 21st place in the Second Division, having won their final game against bottom club... - Why is this mentioned on a section that is related to the play-off.
- Because Sheff Utd ended up in the play-offs directly as a result of this game. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 16:31, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- No further goals were scored and the first leg ended 3–1 to Walsall. - Is this sentence needed in terms of actual context.
- I don't follow. It says that no more goal were scored in the match and gives the final score. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 16:31, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- ...(11 m) after Kelly's initial strike... - Could modify that so it would be "after the inital strike by Kelly..."
- ..., and the match ended... - Drop the second "and" in that sentence.
- I don't think that works. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 16:31, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
Match
[edit]- No mention on where Bristol City finished that previous season.
- It says "Bristol City ended the regular season in fifth place, two positions and seven points below Walsall.[2]". The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 16:51, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- Bristol City's Walsh then saw... - Something just doesn't feel right with the start of this sentence.
- Why not? Walsh played for Bristol City. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 16:51, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- O'Kelly was unavailable for Walsall for the match... - Why is this in the second leg and not in the middle of the first leg.
- Because he pllayed in the first leg and didn't make it back from injury in the second leg and I have no sources to mention the injury in the first leg, perhaps he just finished the game and it was after the event. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 16:51, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- Does George Tyson not have a Wikipedia page?
- ...Barber punched a shot away from Ralph Milne in the third minute. - This would probably be best flipped the other way round so it will Milne before Barber
- I don't follow, it seems fine for me. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 16:51, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- ...hit the Walsall goalpost, a shot from Shutt went close and... - This bit feel a little bit listy if you know what I mean here.
- Yes but that's just how the match went. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 16:51, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- ..."strong, swirling wind was not altogether responsible for some pretty... - Shouldn't this sentence be the last sentence for this section.
- No, it was at that point in the match report that it was relevant. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 16:51, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- No details about the penalty shoot out?
- Not that I can find. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 16:51, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
Post-match
[edit]- Walsall's manager Tommy Coakley was sacked... - Maybe modify this so it would something like: Four months later, Tommy Coakley was sacked...
- Well it was seven months and I think that's asking the reader a bit too much to put that into context. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 16:52, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- ...in 24th and last position in the - Maybe just have as last position
