Name?

[edit]

Is the name correct or is it a typo? Should it be 142nd Fighter Wing? --Patar knight - chat/contributions 16:32, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The USANG and USAF use the abbreviation '2d' instead of '2nd' for their official designations, so the page name is correct. Cromdog (talk) 18:21, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Designations

[edit]

Reference to 373rd Fighter Group is incorrect. This unit was originally designated as the 371st Fighter Group, redesignated 142nd Fighter Group and allocated to Oregon in 1946. Reference is Maurer, Maurer, Editor, "Air Force Combat Units of World War II," Office of Air Force History, Washington D.C. 1983, entry for the 371st Fighter Group, pages 257 - 258. Online at: [1]

Also, reference to the 142nd Fighter Group being redesignated as the 142 Fighter Interceptor Wing in the 1950s is incorrect and a frequently made mistake. The 142nd Fighter Group/Fighter Interceptor Group of that time was a separate organization of the Oregon Air National Guard. The 142nd Air Defense/Fighter Interceptor Wing was a higher-level organization that absorbed resources from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and maybe even Montana, Air National Guard fighter groups. It had a cadre of its own men at Geiger Field near Spokane, WA, but wing staff were augmented by additional personnel from the ANG fighter groups as required, such as during annual summer training encampments held at Gowen Field, Idaho. Sources for this organization are not easily found, one is an article at: [2] ––Zuke Tower

Zuke, This is a common error. In general, the lineages for the groups allotted to the National Guard in 1946 belong to the current operations groups, not the current wings. There are some exceptions, like the 101st and 128th groups (and their lineages are surprising). BTW, I have moved /s that prevented your post from displaying properly --Lineagegeek (talk) 00:18, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Lineagegeek,Thank you for your help with comments display. Understand your point about WWII combat group lineage bestowal to ANG groups after the war. In case of the 142d Fighter Group, it was never a wing until it was redesignated as such in the 1990s. The 142d Fighter-Interceptor/Air Defense Wing was never an Oregon ANG formation, and should be considered a separate organization from the 142d Fighter Group/Fighter-Interceptor Group.
