"Sweet Disposition" is a song by Australian indie rock[1] band The Temper Trap.
Charting
Despite The Temper Trap originating from Australia, "Sweet Disposition", the lead single from the debut album Conditions has proved to be more popular in the UK and Ireland, reaching #6 (in the week beginning 11 October 2009) and #8 respectively, while it only reached a peak of #14 in Australia.
In the Irish charts, it reached #15. The song reached #9 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, due to interest in the song after it appeared in the film (500) Days of Summer.
A dance remix made by Axwell and Dirty South of this song reached #1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay chart in April 2010.
The single was certified gold by the Federation of the Italian Music Industry.[2]
Music videos
There are three music videos for the song. The Australian/domestic version, directed by Madeline Griffith, features the band performing alongside slow motion footage of light bulbs smashing on the floor. The UK/international version directed by Barnaby Roper, features a girl roller blading through space, past transparent images of each band member. That version was also played in Australia following the song's increase in popularity in 2010. The US version, directed by Daniel Eskils, was released in March 2010. This version displays the band members playing around with musical instruments as well as demolishing them, this all being taped with a high-speed camera. Also, instead of the key signature being in D major like the recorded song, the music video version is in C♯ major. All of these videos have appeared on the American television channel MTVu.
Popular culture
The song was featured in the film, (500) Days of Summer, and appears on its official soundtrack album, the Australian hit TV series Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities, the Season 2 finale of Greek – "At World's End"; and most recently in the new corporate campaign (TV advertisement) for Chrysler Group LLC. The song also features in a commercial for Sky Sports soccer featuring José Mourinho for Sky Sports HD in the UK, in a commercial for Eurosport's tennis coverage, in the commercial for Channel 4's coverage of the V Festival on 4Music, in the commercial for Peugeot 3008 in Scandinavia & Toyota Yaris in Indonesia, in the UK's Big Brother 10 finale night "best bits", and was also used on Sky's cricket coverage for an end of international season video, as well as the promo for the AFL Grand Final on Channel Ten in Australia, the season 2 episode "Unmasked" of 90210, and ABC's The Deep End.[citation needed] It also is featured in a commercial for the mobile company O2; a commercial for Rhapsody.com; for the promo for CBS's The Good Wife; and to advertise the summer 2010 lineup of Lifetime. In more recent times, it was the opening song for the second episode of the fourth season of the UK TV series Skins, and as part of Diet Coke's "Stay Extraordinary" advertising campaign, which aired for the first time during the 82nd Academy Awards.
"Sweet Disposition" was used for Seven Network Australia's "Gotta Love It 2010" Promo, as well as on one episode of The World's Strictest Parents. This song was also used to promote Network Ten's AFL finals series in 2009. "Sweet Disposition" was sung by Martin on the BBC 3 series Autistic Superstar, Martin has autism, and rarely communicates with his own parents. He began to learn and sing song lyrics when he was 14, this allowed him to connect with the world. The song was also used for the preview of Eat Pray Love and is also featured in the game Pro Evolution Soccer 2011.
In January 2011 the song was used as the music in the latest advert for Center Parcs. It has been covered several times by British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding. The song is also used in a commercial aired by TV5 to promote its coverage for Earth Hour 2011 which happened on 26 March 2011.
The song also appears in a Season 4 episode of Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
The song recently appears in the red band trailer for the upcoming film Ted, starring Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane and Mila Kunis.
In May 2012 the song was performed by David Julien on the second live show of the first series of The Voice UK.
