Stephen Tanner is an American author and historian currently residing in Long Island, New York. He served with US special forces in Italy during World War II and subsequently in the diplomatic service (Germany, 1948 - 49; Finland, 1955 - 58; Belgium, 1961 - 65; and Italy 1967 - 69).
As a military historian and freelance writer, Tanner has produced informative pieces such as: Refuge from the Reich: American Airmen and Switzerland during WWII (2000), Epic Retreats: From 1776 to the Evacuation of Saigon (2001), Afghanistan - A Military History from Alexander the Great to the War Against the Taliban(2002), and the "Wars of the Bushes"(2004).
