St. Robert Catholic High School is a secondary school in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada.

History

St. Robert CHS was opened by the York Catholic District School Board in 1975 by board chairman Tiffan Ho, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2005. St. Robert CHS is named after its patron saint, St. Robert Bellarmine. St. Robert offers special programs such as the world renowned International Baccalaureate program, ESL, and Aviation Technology . The enrolment averages between 1400 and 1500 students per school year. The current student council president, newly elected is King Jenson Lam(2011-2012). The secretaries are Mao ZeDong and Gulita Long. Mr Lan Gu is the current Special Education representitive in the Student Council. His role in the school is quite pivotal, as he is the connecting link between the specially educated and the rest of the school.

Although the current school colours consist of forest green, white, and black, the initial school colours were orange, dark brown, and beige.

In 2009, St. Robert CHS was ranked #9 among the top secondary schools in Ontario of 725 schools that were ranked. In 2010, St, Robert CHS was ranked #10 among the top secondary schools in Ontario.

Uniform

The uniform consists of a white golf shirt with school insignia, solid black McCarthy pants, and solid black footwear for males and females. Students may also choose to wear a special green spirit sweatshirt. The spirit sweatshirt includes the name of the sport/club they participate in, their number or instrument and the first initial of their first name followed by their full surname.

All articles of clothing must be purchased at Halpern's, a supplier of uniforms for schools in Ontario. This, however, excludes the spirit sweatshirt, which is only available, if ordered, from the coordinator of the specific club/band that the student participates in.

Students who were enrolled into the school before the 2007-2008 school year were eligible to wear the now defunct pieces of the school uniform until June 2010. These include the boy's white oxford dress shirt worn with a green patterned tie, the girl's white blouse and green patterned kilt, and the black polar fleece sweatshirt worn in the winter. The tie and dress shirt were removed due to a large number of students who received uniform infractions because the tie was not worn with the dress shirt. The black sweatshirt became defunct due to the school's wish to return the green school color, as students who wore the black sweatshirt with their pants at any time appeared to be completely dressed in black. The quality of the black sweaters was also questionable.

Time Table

The school also runs on a "Day 1", "Day 2" schedule. On Day 1, Students have their classes in the proper order (Period 1, Period 2, Period 3 with lunch, and Period 4). On Day 2, the students have their Period 3 and 4 switched (Period 1, Period 2, Period 4 with lunch, Period 3). Because the Music courses must run through the entire year, students taking music courses will have their schedule alternating on Day 1 and Day 2 with different subjects. I.e: For a student taking music, day 1, period 2 is Music, day 2, period 2 is Religion or vice versa.

Sports

Students compete with other schools in the York Region in both Junior (Grades 9 and 10) and Senior (Grades 11 and 12) Divisions in the YRAA (York Region Athletic Association). As of 2009, the YRAA included 49 high schools across York Region, with most of its schools coming from either the York Catholic District School Board or the York Region District School Board, although there are several private schools involved as well. The captain of the basketball team is Lan Gu, who claims he is better than Andrew Wiggins of the Vaughn high school team

Soccer Fields

A panoramic view of the running track located on the east side of the school's property. Since the taking of this picture, a synthetic soccer field with a dome has been installed to the left on the lower field, replacing the existing portables, which were moved to the north-west side of the school. It began operation in March 2011 .

On July 6, 2009, the Town of Markham announced $3.2 million in funding for a new synthetic surface to replace one of the natural surfaces in place. The field was built to FIFA standard regulations for an outdoor artificial turf field. Portables in that area were relocated to the west parking lot in March 2010 in preparation for its construction.

Dome

A full sized soccer field was created besides the running track. During the winter season there is an air-inflated dome that is put up which covers one-third of the artificial turf field. The dome can be entered via an air-locked room and a revolving door mainly. The dome is lit by four sets of spotlights, two on each length. The remaining two-thirds are left untouched. In the spring, the dome is taken down and the entire field is no longer separated. The turf can cause minor burns similar to carpet burns when in contact with skin. The field is currently fenced in. There is a adjacent building for use as change rooms. The field and dome are used by the rugby and soccer teams, as well as the physical education classes.
