Singam II is an upcoming Tamil film directed by Hari, starring Suriya in the title role with Anushka Shetty, Hansika Motwani, Vivek and Santhanam in supporting roles.[2] The film is a sequel to the successful 2010 film Singam.[3] It is tentatively scheduled to release in July 2013 along with a Telugu dubbed version titled Singam.[4]

Production

Casting

The project features Anushka Shetty and Hansika Motwani as the female leads.[5] Reprising their roles from the original film are Vivek, Vijayakumar, Nassar, and Radha Ravi. Prakash Raj has been left out while actors Rahman, Mukesh Rishi and Santhanam have been added to the franchise. British actor Danny Sapani plays the antagonist.[6] The actress Anjali is also featured in an item number.[7]

Filming

The film has been shot mainly in Kerala, Tuticorin, Chennai, Hyderabad, Malaysia, Tirunelveli and Karaikudi. The director has also filmed some of the important songs, stunts and talkie portions in Durban, Cape Town and Joburg in South Africa as well as Kenya. Primary production began in September 2012 and lasted for seven months. It was wrapped up on April 30, 2013.[8]

Devi Sri Prasad, who had also worked on the score of Singam, returned for Singam II, marking his fourth project with both Suriya and director Hari. Bollywood singer Baba Sehgal had recorded a song in the film following the success of his "Kadhal Vandhale" number from the original.[9][10] The soundtrack was released on June 2, 2013,[11] a day after its originally scheduled release and the function was attended by several celebrities.[1][12]

The soundtrack received mixed critical response, however, it topped the charts, while the songs "Puriyavillai" and "Kannukkulle" were hailed the best of the lot by critics. Behindwoods gave the album 2.5/5 stars stating that it is "a straight forward, nothing fancy, DSP album."[13] Indiaglitz gave it 2.5/5 stars and commenting, "an album strictly for the masses targeting the masala aspect."[14]

The video received a massive response and reached 1 million+ views within three days.[12] A second teaser was released by Prince Pictures on June 5. The film was scheduled to release worldwide on June 14, 2013 while the Telugu version would release on June 28, but is now postponed to sometime in July.[19]
