Sergei Ivanovich Vasiliev (in Russian: Сергей Иванович Васильев; born in 1961 in St. Petersburg, Russia) is the owner of Soyuz Corporation and member company of the Guild of Purveyors to the Kremlin.
Early life and education
Sergei Vasiliev was educated at the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, which trains specialists to serve on the civil and commercial fleet.
Career
Business
Sergei Ivanovich Vasiliev began his career in December 1987 at “Morskaya Chayka” (Seagull) Corporation.[1] Between 1987 and 2000, he created and headed a number of companies, the majority of which dealt with the import and trade of food commodities.[1] In 2002, Vasiliev established the Soyuz Corporation, which bears the stamp of the Official Purveyor to the Moscow Kremlin and is a leading producer of special-purpose fats for the Russian food industry.[2][3]
Controversy
Sergei Vasiliev owns a number of firms in the Netherlands under the company Leaderland TTM B.V., which until 2012 was the holding company for Soyuz Corporation.[4] In 2013, Vasiliev dismissed his long-term associate and Soyuz minority shareholder (25%), Andrei Baranov, from all his leadership positions and attempted to acquire his shares in the company.[5] The latter claimed this was done in contradiction to Dutch law and legal proceedings were launched in the Netherlands in January 2014.[4] During the court case launched by Andrei Baranov against Sergei Vasiliev, media reports suggested that Vasiliev used various forms of intimidation to silence his former partner, including arson.[6][7]
Awards
Sergei Vasiliev has received numerous awards from Russian officials and religious figures.[8] He has been awarded the Highest Public Award of the Russian Federation for the wealth and propensity of Russia in the sphere of food production.[2] Additionally, he has received the prestigious order badge from the Russian Orthodox Church.[8]
