History

[edit]

St Berchmans College is the first higher education institution under the Archeparchy of Changanacherry. After the establishment of St Berchmans English High School, Changanasserry by Fr. Charles Lavigne in 1891, the College was founded in 1922 by Venerable Mar Thomas Kurialacherry, Bishop of Changanassery diocese on seeing the need for institution of higher education in Malabar region. The college campus was first built on the premises of St Marys Church, Parel under the University of Madras.[7] Later, in 1925, it was transferred to its present site as a three storied building, today named Kurialacherry Block and was affiliated to Kerala University in 1937. It is assumed that the famous 100 feet tall tower block of the college was completed around this time.[7][1]

In 1925, the College authorities decided to install the 12 feet tall statue of Christ the King, brought from Spain, on the top of the tower, kept on a 6 feet tall pedestal. The college chapel, built in 1940, was named Christ King's Chapel, after the installation of the statue.[7][8] Today, the college is affiliated to MG University, Kottayam.
