Saint Agnes Academy is a Dominican university-preparatory school for young women in southwest Houston, Texas, United States. The school is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

History

Pauline Gannon, a Dominican Sister, founded St. Agnes Academy in 1905. St. Agnes opened on February 11, 1906, at 3901 Fannin Street in what is now considered to be Midtown. The school was named after Saint Agnes of Rome. The school was founded as a grade 1 through 12 school with boarding facilities. The University of Texas and the Texas State Board of Education accredited St. Agnes in 1917. In 1939, boarding was discontinued. In 1952, St. Agnes began to serve grades nine through 12 only.

Location

In September 1963, the school moved across town to its new location at 9000 Bellaire Boulevard (near the intersection of Gessner Drive and Bellaire Boulevard), adjacent to Strake Jesuit College Preparatory.

Mission Statement

The school's mission statement reads: "Rooted in the Dominican tradition, St. Agnes Academy provides a Catholic college preparatory education that encourages young women to develop intellectual curiosity, to work for social justice and to act with integrity and compassion."

Since 1906, St. Agnes Academy has been synonymous with excellence, leadership, service, and faith. True to the founding mission, an Academy education reflects the balance between achievement and aspiration. The St. Agnes community shares a common purpose and a shared responsibility:

Student Life

Many students are involved in at least one before or after school activity. The music program includes the Choir, Triple Trio, the Band and Orchestras (taken at Strake Jesuit). Sports include swimming, diving, tennis, basketball, water polo, soccer and softball. There is also a fall musical and play, and well as a spring musical.

After school, many often walk to the plaza next door to get dinner when they have to stay at school for a long time.

Alumnae Association

St. Agnes Academy alumnae are an integral part of a network that encompasses nearly 8,000 graduates. St. Agnes encourages ongoing relationships among classmates, current students and the school community, and offers a variety of ways for alumnae to get involved throughout the year.
