The Asansol-Durgapur region is composed of undulating [[laterite]] soil. This area lies between two mighty rivers – the [[Damodar River|Damodar]] and the [[Ajay River|Ajay]]. They flow almost parallel to each other in the region – the average distance between the two rivers is around 30 km. For ages the area was heavily forested and infested with plunderers and marauders. The first production unit of [[Hindustan Cables]] was set up in 1952 in Rupnarainpur, in technical collaboration with Standard Telephones and Cables Ltd.for production of paper insulated dry core cables. In 2007 updated and expanded Rupnarainpur unit, with an installed capacity of 63 LCKM, manufactures polythene insulated jelly filled cables and aerial cables. |

Facilities for manufacturing 1 million pairs of telephone coiled cords and 1.5 million pieces of computer cords have been set up in the unit.
