Bianca Leonor Quiñones, known professionally as Quiñ,[1][2] is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer from Los Angeles.[3][4] She is signed to Interscope Records and Fantasy Soul.

Early life and education

[edit]

Quiñ's passion for music and performing began as a child as she grew up around her musician father play the conga drums and trumpet,[4] her mother was a dancer and school teacher,[5] and she sang in her church and high school choirs.[6][7][1][5] According to her mother, she wrote her first song at a young age after the birth of her sister, Bailey Rose.[8] She was born to a Puerto Rican father and Mexican mother.[9]

She attended school in Pasadena, California.[2][1] After graduating from Pasadena High School, she moved on to college at Cal State Northridge. After a year and a half of studying Psychology, Quiñ moved to West Oakland[2][1] and began focusing on music full time at age 19.[3][2]

Career

[edit]

Quiñ dropped her debut EP Galactica[2] in October 2016,[10] which includes a feature from G-Eazy[2] on the song “Over Again.” She describes the EP as “the first chapter to my Fantasy Soul Universe.”[5] Her song “Lightspeed” was involved in the Visions of Harmony project with Apple Music and NASA, which aimed to educate the public on the Juno spacecraft by combining science and art.[11][12][13]

A year later, in September 2017,[8][14] Quiñ released her Dreamgirl EP,[15][16] which she called a sequel of her album Galactica.[3][2] The EP featured collaborations with Syd on the song “Sticky Situation,"[17] and Buddy[18][14][19][2] on the song “Happened to Happen.”[20] A music video for “Sticky Situation” was released in August 2017.[18][21]

She describes her sound as "fantasy soul" and music that "has the power of versatility". In 2017, Quiñ introduced her label, Fantasy Soul, named after the genre she coined.[22][23][24][5][16]

In August 2018, she released “Remind Me” as a single,[25][26] described by The Fader as “daydream-inducing antidote for all life's worries.”[26] Later that year, she collaborated with Vans for a campaign highlighting the importance of creativity and personal style.[27]

In June 2019, she signed to Interscope Records.[28] She released her fourth EP Lucid in November, which featured 6lack.[28]

Quiñ has opened for Erykah Badu,[29] Gnash,[15] JMSN, and performed at The Fader Fort at SXSW,[30] Afropunk Festival[17] and Galore’s Girl Cult Festival.[31]

On April 20, 2020, musician Lisa released a choreography video to Quin's "Mushroom Chocolate".[32][33]

She was featured on the Khalid song "Brand New" from his Scenic Drive mixtape which released in December 2021.[34]
