The PlayStation Network, often abbreviated to PSN in the gaming community, is Sony's free online service provided for use with their PlayStation 3 (PS3)[2] and PlayStation Portable (PSP) video game consoles. As of May 16 2008, there are over 9.8 million registered PlayStation Network accounts worldwide, with users having made 170 million downloads totaling 86 petabytes of data, which Sony says is equivalent to 17 million single-layer DVDs worth of data.[3]
User registration
Registration is performed via the PlayStation 3 console or a personal computer. Two types of accounts can be created: Master accounts and Sub accounts. The Master account, as the name suggests, allows full access to all settings including parental control but the master has to be over the age of 18 to create an account. Sub accounts can subsequently be created with desired restrictions set and monitored by the master account holder.[4]
Since master/sub accounts are not linked with the PS3 serial number, which allows users to buy and sell used consoles, they can be used with different physical consoles as a guest user. Therefore a single PS3 console can have multiple master accounts. A PSN registration is required for the PlayStation Store access and a guest user's account can be used to download PSN Store purchased items to a friend's console, but an account is not required to access the PS3's own web browser. The ability to use PlayStation Store content licenses for re-download is limited to five different PlayStation 3 consoles.
The PS3 console has been launched in most areas as of March 23, 2007. Some sites speculated that potential PS3 customers from outside of Japan and the US would be able to pre-register their favorite usernames online at the PlayStation Store.[5] This proved to be true, as European gamers were able to register prior to the March 23 release using their PC, giving the added benefit of being able to quickly pre-register their details and more importantly, secure their chosen and world unique username.[6] Rapper The Game is one of many celebrities to have a PSN account, under the PSN name L-A-X after his 2008 album. He has posted a video on Youtube inviting fellow online players to play him in Madden NFL 09, and to "Get your ass whipped."

Video download service
Peter Dille, SCE Senior Vice President of Marketing & PlayStation Network, announced on the official PlayStation.Blog that a video download service consisting of full-length TV shows and movies would be launching on the PSN in 2008.[7] Speaking at Sony’s mid-term strategy meeting on 26 June, 2008, Kaz Hirai said that the firm will roll out its video download service on the PlayStation Network for PS3 and PSP during the summer, initially in the US and then in Japan and Europe at later dates. Further information was released during the 2008 E3 Press Conference. Movies and TV shows will be available in full and/or rental form, and will be available using the current PlayStation Store. Many major studios are participating in the video download service including Sony Pictures, MGM, Lionsgate, Fox Home Entertainment, Warner Bros, Disney, Paramount Pictures, Studio Bones and Funimation Entertainment. The service was made available in the US on the evening of July 15, 2008, the same day as Sony's E3 press conference.[8][9]
Qore
On 3 June 2008 SCEA announced a new service, Qore, which would launch on the PlayStation Store in North America on 5 June 2008. In a press release published on the Official PlayStation Blog, Qore: Presented by the PlayStation Network is described as "a highly interactive, monthly lifestyle gaming program covering the world inside PlayStation is on its way to PS3."[10]
PSOne Classics
PSOne Classics, launched on May 3, 2007, is a service which allows PS3 and PSP users to download PlayStation games directly to their PS3 hard drive or PSP Memory Stick.
PlayStation Home
PlayStation Home is a community based service for the PlayStation Network which is currently in the closed beta stage. An open beta is scheduled to launch in Fall 2008, however an estimated release date for the full product has not yet been announced. Home allows users to create an avatar character for their PlayStation 3 console. This avatar will get their own house, which can be decorated with items players can receive in several achievements. Also included in the online virtual world is the ability to meet other PS3 users, interact, play games, show friends different types of media saved on the PS3 hard drive, and much more. In the future home will also expand, allowing players to have more items such as clothing, luxury housing and household items which can be purchased from the PlayStation Store.
PlayStation 3 Trophies
for a list of titles that support PlayStation 3 Trophies.
PlayStation 3 Trophies are an achievement system on the PlayStation 3 game console, introduced with the PlayStation 3 system software 2.40 update[11]. This update was withdrawn shortly after issues arose with a small percentage of systems being rendered unusable after updating.[12] The release of version 2.41 on July 8 2008 restored the feature.[13]
Game Developers have the option of including certain goals within their games, which when achieved will award the player a relevant trophy. Trophies can be bronze, silver, or gold; with gold contributing more experience to your next 'level' than silver, and silver giving more experience than bronze. A platinum trophy is awarded when a player achieves all of the trophies in a game. Smaller games such as those downloaded from the PSN won't have a platinum trophy. [14].
Trophies are shown on a player's PS3 Network Profile, which also show a Trophy level. Each trophy will contribute towards the percentage of the players level, eventually levelling up to the next[14].
Life With PlayStation
On 26 June, 2008, Chief Executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, Kaz Hirai, announced Life With PlayStation for the PlayStation 3 via the PlayStation Network. The service displays a 3D Earth which the user can rotate the view and zoom in to access weather and news headlines for locations around the world. The user is then able to select any headline to view the full article.[15] At E3 2008, Head of SCEA, Jack Tretton announced that a new partnership between Sony and Google which will allow users to upload video content to YouTube from within games. This is also part of the Life With PlayStation service which was scheduled to be available by the end of July 2008[16], but is now due to be released in August 2008[17].
Features
- All of the online services are free, as is multiplayer gaming. Items that are not free include paid-for downloadable content and subscriptions to premium services, such as certain massively multiplayer online games.
- The PlayStation 3 has an integrated web browser, developed internally by Sony. Much like the PSP browser, the PS3 browser also supports bookmarks and most other standard features found in modern web browsers. In addition to the PS3's controller, USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice can be used to operate the browser. Currently, Flash is supported up to version 7.[citation needed]
