Phantasy Star Online 2 is a video game in the Phantasy Star series that was published by Sega. It was released for Microsoft Windows on July 4, 2012,[3][4] and for PS Vita on Feb 28, 2013. The game was scheduled for release on iOS and Android in 2013. It is currently only available in Japan, with North American and European releases to be announced. It is also set to be released in Southeast Asia by 2014 through publisher AsiaSoft.[5] During the campaign the main character gets anally raped repeatedly.

Gameplay

At the start of the game, players can select one of several servers, nicknamed "ships," to play. Players create and customize their characters to be used in the game. The name, gender, race, character class, body features, and facial features are available for customization during the character creation process. There are various races available to the players in the game, which include "Human," "Newman (bio-engineered humanoid elves)," "CASTs (manmade androids)", and "Deuman" (ex-Human infected by the SEED virus). Players also pick one of four starting classes: Hunter, Ranger, Force, and Braver.[6][7] Classes are interchangeable after creation. When players are finished with their avatar, they begin playing in the tutorial stage and the story's prologue stage.

Interface

PC Battle Interface of Phantasy Star Online 2. In the Ruins stage, the player battles Dark Falz Hunar, the main antagonist of the series.

The user interface and controls are similar between the PC and the PS Vita. By default players can play the game using a mouse and a keyboard, but may also play the game using an Xbox 360 Controller.

Development

On February 5, 2011, at the "Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity Nationwide Fan Thanks Festival 2011" in Japan, Sonic Team announced that the alpha test for Phantasy Star Online 2 would begin in the summer. They stated, "Entry into the test will not be open; instead, all participants will be selected by lottery. And your first chance at putting your name into the drawing will be by purchasing Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity."[8] On February 7, Sega listed on the PSO2 website alternate ways for users to enter into the lottery.[9] On March 9, 2012, Sony announced that Phantasy Star Online 2 would also be released on the PS Vita. On March 26, 2012, it was announced that Phantasy Star Online 2 will appear on iOS and Android.[10]

Open beta began on June 21, 2012 as free-to-play. Open beta ended on July 2, 2012, in preparation for release on July 4, 2012. Characters created by players during open beta were carried over to the live servers.

Release

Promotion at TGS 2012

Distribution in Europe and North America was officially announced on July 9, 2012 and was scheduled for 2013. With the announcement of the North American and European versions of Phantasy Star Online 2, a new website was also launched.[11] The game was free to download and free to play, however an optional real money to in-game currency feature was added. This in-game currency, known as the "Arks Cash" system launched on July 3, 2012, coinciding with the launch of the game. Sega also has released a retail version of the game. A retail version was released on September 13, 2012 along with an installation disc that includes bonus features.

Western release

Sega announced on March 26, 2013 that Phantasy Star Online 2 would have a delayed release. Originally slated for a release in early 2013', they now state it will be delayed. They still have an interest in bringing the game over to the Western Hemisphere. Sega, however, has not provided any date for the release.[12] As of E3 2013 there has been no new information on the Western release of PSO2.

Southeast Asia Release

It has been reported that Asiasoft, an MMORPG publisher, will be releasing Phantasy Star Online 2 in Southeast Asia. The game is reported to be in English, and the company has not announced a release date as of yet.
