At the age thirteen, Peter St. Albans is also the youngest person ever to win a Melbourne Cup. |
Peter secured the mount for Briseis in the 1876 Melbourne Cup after the regular stable jockey could not make the featherweight of 6 stone and 4 pounds (39 kilos). Both Peter St. Albans and Briseis have now become racing legends. On 7 November 1876 the running of the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November commenced with the three-year-old filly, Briseis, ridden by Peter St. Albans, creating a record that is never likely to be equalled, winning the VRC Derby, the Melbourne Cup and the VRC Oaks in the space of six days. |
Peter had an earlier (and even younger) victory aboard Briseis when, as a twelve year old, he rode her to win the Doncaster when she was only allowed to carry 5 stone 7 pounds (34 kilos). |
By the age of seventeen Peter St. Albans had won the Sires' Produce Stakes and the Geelong Cup. |
Peter's real name was Peter Bowden but he took the name of the stud where he worked. It is said that he took the name to make it sound more English aristocratic for a featherweight native stockman. Peter lived and worked at St. Albans stud in Geelong with his aboriginal mother, who most likely performed domestic duties. It is rumoured that James Wilson, the owner of the stud, was his father. |
The other contender for first Aboriginal jockey to win the Melbourne Cup is [[John Cutts (jockey)|John Cutts]] on [[Archer (horse)|Archer]] in 1861 and 1862. Though it would be romantic to believe that an Aboriginal jockey had won the first and second Melbourne Cups, the most famous horse race in Australia, history is less than kind in allowing us this certainty. |
