Paappi Appacha is a 2010 Indian Malayalam-language action-comedy film written and directed by Mamas, marking his directorial debut. The film stars Dileep and Innocent in lead roles and was released in April 2010 across more than 70 screens in Kerala. The characters in the film exhibit a lifestyle similar to the comedians portrayed in the song "Paappi Appacha" from the 1972 film Mayiladumkunnu, which starred Prem Nazir.
Plot
[edit]Businessman and politician Nirappel Mathai and his son Paappi, who share a close relationship, often engage in mischief in their village, Ithirikkandam, with the help of Paappi's companion, Kuttaappi. Despite being liked by the villagers, Mathai and Paappi struggle to maintain the image of a prosperous family. Paappi is in love with Annie, a local school teacher, but she dislikes him due to an incident in their school days where Paappi humiliated her. Paappi dropped out of school in the 9th grade, which only adds to her negative perception of him, as it reminds her of his father’s illiteracy. Paappi's mother Maria and sister Mollykkutty like Annie and hope she will marry Paappi, but the casual attitude of the Nirappel men dims their hopes.
Meanwhile, Mathai’s business rival, Manikkunju, causes trouble for the family. Annie, along with Shashankan Muthalali, who envies the Nirappel family's apparent wealth, and her colleague Dasan Maash, oppose Paappi in the Panchayat election to teach him a lesson in responsibility. Despite Paappi's efforts, Annie wins and becomes the Panchayat President, humiliating Paappi.
Annie later receives a marriage proposal, and Paappi visits her house during the process. Annie's groom-to-be, Tony Issac, expresses optimism about the match. However, Annie later receives a call from Tony's mother, accusing Paappi of assaulting Tony. Furious, Annie confronts Mathai, accusing Paappi of further misconduct. Mathai, though believing Paappi is innocent, begins to doubt him after Paappi angrily admits to harming Tony during a public event. Mathai strikes Paappi, and their relationship is fractured.
When the Nirappel family’s school is burned down, Mathai assumes Paappi is responsible and disowns him, suspecting Paappi of even attempting to kill him. Seizing the opportunity, Shashankan turns Mathai further against Paappi. In retaliation, Paappi tries to sabotage Nirappel’s financial institution by spreading rumors of bankruptcy, but Mathai outsmarts him, leaving Paappi and Kuttaappi to flee in embarrassment. Shashankan replaces Paappi as Mathai’s trusted associate, and Annie begins to feel guilty for causing the rift between Paappi and Mathai.
As Paappi attempts to stand on his own, his mother and sister continue to support him. Paappi, out of love for his mother, prevents the sale of family land by falsely declaring it as archeologically valuable, making it unsellable. Annie later meets Paappi, who clarifies that he was not responsible for disrupting her marriage proposal. Annie begins to develop feelings for Paappi as he distances himself from his past actions.
Meanwhile, Manikkunju approaches Mathai with a false reconciliation offer, which Mathai declines, increasing Manikkunju’s animosity. The villagers become concerned about the deteriorating condition of the market once managed by Paappi and Mathai. Annie, using Paappi's election plans, proposes a farmer cooperative to help the market, gaining support from Dasan Maash.
One night, Mathai and Shashankan are attacked by a sword-wielding assailant. Mathai is injured, and Shashankan escapes. Mathai accuses Paappi of the attack, and Paappi is pursued by the police for allegedly attacking Mathai and kidnapping Annie. In reality, Annie was kidnapped by Manikkunju and Dasan, who reveals that he holds a grudge against Mathai for purchasing his family’s land. Dasan also confesses his obsession with Annie, despite knowing she loves Paappi.
Dasan admits to burning the school and trying to ruin Mathai and Paappi's relationship. He attempts to harm Annie, but Paappi arrives in time to save her and confronts Dasan and Manikkunju. Mathai arrives, encourages Paappi to defend himself, and Paappi defeats the attackers. Despite his anger, Paappi spares Dasan's life at Mathai’s request, revealing that he had previously given Dasan a teaching job out of sympathy for his family’s downfall.
In the end, the truth is revealed, and Shashankan asks Paappi if he loves his father or mother more. As Paappi is about to answer, Mathai humorously interjects with "Annie," and the story concludes on a happy note.

The film's soundtrack contains four songs, all composed by Vidyasagar. The lyrics were written by Gireesh Puthenchery and Vayalar Sarathchandra Varma. This was one of the last films of Giressh Puthenchery as a lyricist, due to his untimely death in February 2010.
