Mapúa Institute of Technology joined the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines) in 1930. Their varsity team is called The Mapúa Cardinals. The other senior varsity teams may also be referred to as the Cardinals. The juniors team were the Red Robins. The juniors team was rendered inactive due to the closing of Mapúa High School. Starting in the 2008-2009 season, Mapúa was represented in the juniors division by the newly-established Malayan High School of Science.

The Mapúa Cardinals holds the NCAA record for the most number of General Championships in the seniors division with a total of 20 -- the last of these championships was won in 1993. The Colegio de San Juan de Letran is a distant second which has 8 seniors titles.

Of the total Seniors GC's won by the Cardinals, 10 were hauled from the 1980s to the mid-1990s in addition to 3 (out of a total 8) in the juniors division over the same period, a testament to the leadership of the legendary Valerio "Amang" Lopez as Athletic Director.

The Mapúa Cheerleading Association, known informally as the Cheerping Cardinals, won the NCAA's first-ever cheerdancing competition held in 2004. Since then, they continued to show great performances, including a runner-up finish in the 2007 competition where they lost to the University of Perpetual Help pep squad by a mere one-point margin.

Central Student Council
The Central Student Council (CSC) is the highest student body in the campus. The CSC is composed of one representative from each of eleven (11) schools of the institute. It serves as the coordinating body of the School Student Councils and the Council of Organizations.

The New Builder
The New Builder is the official publication of the Mapua Institute of Technology. It is managed by a group of student journalists under the supervision of an Editor-in-Chief (EIC) and Editorial Adviser. Until the 1960s the school paper was known simply as "The Builder" but the name was briefly changed to "Avante Garde" in the early 1970s. When student activism subsided at the onset of Martial Law, the school paper reappeared under its current name. The Cardinal & Gold is the official college yearbook of the Mapua Institute of Technology.

The Malayan controversy
On February 10,2005, as a part of Mapúa's plans for elevating from institute to university status, the administration announced the renaming of the institute to Malayan University, based from the Malayan Insurance Company of the Yuchengcos. But while waiting to become eligible for university status, the name "Malayan Colleges" will be used and the name "Mapúa Institute of Technology" will be retained for the College of Engineering, Architecture and IT. This move became very unpopular with the students and the alumni. On February 14, the students protested outside the campus where Muralla Street at Intramuros was filled with Mapúa students clad in black shirts protesting against the decision of the administration and criticized them for not consulting the students before making such a decision. This event has been called as the "Black Valentine" protest. Despite the efforts of the students, faculty and alumni against the decision, the Board of Trustees and the CHED have approved the name change and will be implemented in the near future.

Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College (OLOPS College, or simply OLOPSC) is a private, non-sectarian, Filipino tertiary learning institution located in Concepcion, Marikina. It was founded by Sir Dionisio Salvador, Sr. in 1978. The institution is a reputable source of students with morale and discipline. As of 2009, there are already 5,000+ estimated students enrolled.

History

Early activities and Opening

OLOPSC was founded on February 12, 1978 by Sir Dionisio Salvador, Sr., a graduate of Far Eastern University with a course of Architecture. At first, it was just a day-care center hiding from a single roof in a pelota court at Bayan-bayanan Ave. in Concepcion, Marikina with at least 50 pupils. In 1978, the Our Lady of Perpetual Succor School was established.[1]

Moving In

The increasing number of enrollees in the succeeding years required the transfer of the school site to rented lots still along Bayanbayanan Avenue in Concepcion, Marikina where additional school buildings were constructed.[1]

In the 80's

In 1985, the school was already operating under full government recognition in all three of these courses: Preschool. Grade School and High School.

In 1986, OLOPSS moved to its present location along Gen. Ordoñez Street, on a 3.5 – hectare lot. It is on this site where it proudly stands today not just as a landmark in Marikina but also a comfortable home to its students and its employees.[1]

In the 90's

In 1995, OLOPSS changed its name to Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College (OLOPSC) when it opened its college department. This has now attained government recognition and on its ways to accreditation.

In the years 1996 and 1997, the present School Chapel's construction was finished.[1]

In the Summer of 1999, the OLOPSCians saw the rise of the new two-story building for Grades 1 & 2.[1]

Awards, Government Recognitions and Citations

Alongside its structural growth, OLOPSC also became more competitive in its pursuits. Both the Grade School and High School maintained an impressive record in government examinations like the NCEE and the NEAT for the whole length of time they were administered. In 1993, then DECS Order No. 51, gave the school accreditation benefits, to include academic and curricular deregulation though, for having been one of the Top 250 Secondary Schools nationwide based on the National College Entrance Examinations (NCEE) and the National Secondary Assessment Test (NSAT) results. Also in the list, Grade School was also in the circle of the Top 100 schools nationwide when the National Elementary Achievement Test was administered for the first time in history. In the School Year 1996-1997, the High School scored another record breaking high when it ranked as no. 6 in the NSAT Division Ranking while the Grade School ranked no. 7 among elementary schools division wide.[1]

OLOPSC has also reaped honors in various academic, art and literary – musical competitions, and has graduated numbers of students, many of them gaining admission in premiere colleges and universities where they graduated with honors and citations, with many of them topping board exams in their own fields too.[1]

Silver Jubilee Anniversary

The succeeding school years saw the switching of classrooms with air-conditioning ones as its serves as one of the Silver Jubilee gifts to the school community. Also included were the construction of the new two-story building for the Preschool, the freezing of tuition fees for a year, the reformulation of the school’s vision-mission, the revision of the Student Handbook in all departments, and a number of policies to enhance employee benefits.[1]

Demise of the Founder

On August 11, 2005, the whole OLOPSCian community was shocked by the news spreading throughout the campus, the demise of Mr. Dionisio A. Salvador, the founder of the school and its President for 28 years. His death was due to a multiple organ failure that was triggered by his heart condition.

Installation of the New President

On September 17. 2008, as a gift to her 65th birthday, Mrs. Carmen C. Salvador, the school’s Executive Vice President for 28 years, was installed as the next President of OLOPS College succeeding his husband.[1]

Pearl Jubilee Anniversary

On February of 2008, the school celebrated its 30th or Pearl Anniversary. The anniversary was marked with programs such as Street Dancing competition, variety shows, Family day, and lots of exciting activities. The event was ended with a fireworks display.
