Northville High School is the public high school of Northville Public Schools that serves the city of Northville, Michigan, the larger Northville Township, Novi Township and the southern part of the city of Novi. As the school district population has grown throughout the years, so has the high school. 2,266 students were enrolled at the beginning of the 2010–11 school year. The high school used to be located in the city of Northville itself. With the substantial growth of the surrounding community, the district constructed a larger facility in Northville Township, south of the city. The previous building became Hillside Middle School. Two years after construction of the new building, an extension to the east wing of the building was added. The school was moved to a new location on 6 Mile. On October 7, 2009, the school was evacuated due to a bomb threat received over phone.[1] In addition, another weapon scare took place on January 20, 2011, causing a lockdown and swat team involvement.[2]

Athletics

Northville High School has teams in the following sports: football, cross country, soccer, golf, basketball, wrestling, swimming, hockey, baseball, track, tennis, lacrosse, cheerleading, pom pon, volleyball, gymnastics, and softball. Northville High School also offers club sports teams in hockey, rugby, bowling, figure skating, ultimate frisbee, equestrianism and the newly formed Northville Rowing Club.[citation needed]

Clubs and performing arts

Northville offers many extracurricular activities, including National Honor Society, Health Awareness Club, Rotary Interact Club French club (known as "le cercle français"), Quiz Bowl, German club, band, choir, Science Olympiad, Drama club, Recycling club, Environmental Awareness Club, Robotics, Operation Smile, Philosophy Club, and SADD.[citation needed]

Band Program

Under the direction of Mike Rumbell and assistant director Johanne Ray-Hepp, Northville High School's band program has been recognized both in state competitions and various festivals. Though the marching band does not compete against other schools, Northville's concert bands have frequently received top ratings at state festivals. In 2011, every band received a top rating of 1 at MSBOA District Festival, the only school in the state to do so. The school also offers two jazz bands, and the Northville High School Jazz Ensemble I has won "Best of Show" in the MSBOA State Jazz Festival numerous times and is frequently invited to perform at such venues as the Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival.[citation needed]

Choir Program

There are three choir directors at Northville: Mary-Kay Pryce, Mark Krempski, and Beth Richert, a former student. Northville High School has boasted one of the largest high school choir programs in Michigan. About 1 out of 4 students in school is estimated to be part of the choir program. [dubiousdiscuss][verification needed] Northville is part of District 12. Mark Krempski previously served as District 12's District Manager. The concerts at Northville are famous for the major work their top choir performs every year and the pep rally songs by Treblemakers and Backbeat. Northville's Choir Department's Holiday Concert is the largest individual high school concert in the state.[dubiousdiscuss]This three show concerts will sell out all three nights and is attended by many of the other directors from around the Metro Detroit area. Music from Backbeat, Treblemakers, Chorale, and Chamber Choir are played during the Christmas season on the radio station, 100.3 WNIC. In 2008, the members of Backbeat were invited to perform at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival as one of the top ten musical acts in the state.

Broadcasting Department

Northville has one of the most advanced Broadcasting Departments in the state. Maureen Gorshak and Carolyn Davis teach a two period class that produces a full student run television news show every day. The students gain valuable real world experience with meeting a dead line in all aspects as students serve as directors, editors, camera operators, anchors, reporters, script writers, audio technicians, TelePrompTer operators, and run the show entirely by themselves. They learn to use a green screen, TelePrompTer, and Apple's Final Cut Studio to put on their production and in 2008, the show was entirely revamped and upgraded to a professional level by student driven ideas and extra voluntary work done by students both in and out of school.[citation needed][dubiousdiscuss]

Publications

The yearbook Palladium is produced through a course. In 2008, the formally discontinued newspaper, the 'Mustanger', was re-introduced.
