Niles North High School, or NNHS, is a public four-year high school located in Skokie, Illinois, a North Shore suburb of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. It is part of Niles Township Community High School District 219, which also includes Niles West High School. It is also home to several Special Education programs, including the Anchor, Bridges, & SAILS programs. The current enrollment for this school is around 2,300 students.

The school was used for some scenes in the 1984 movie Sixty Nine Candles (along with Niles East High School).[6]

The school appeared on WGN Channel 9 news in 2004 when some senior students (Ramsen Bobo) listed this school on eBay as a prank. The prank was also reported on the front page of the June 9, 2004 issue of the Chicago Tribune.[7]

Niles North has hosted the Suburban Regional History Fair for seven years.

Academics

In 2005, Niles North High School had an average composite ACT score of 21.9, and graduated 91.9% of its senior class. The average class size is 16.1. Niles North has not made Adequate Yearly Progress on the Prairie State Achievement Examination(PSAE), a state test part of the No Child Left Behind Act.[8] A campaign, "Head North" has been started near the end of 2006 that is intended to improve the school's ACT score before the PSAE testing along with other resource such as test-taking workshops to assisting sophomores who have struggled on the pre-ACT examination called the PLAN test.

Niles North High School currently enrolls 2,600 student a year, which is 400 students less than its sister-school Niles West High School.

The 2010–2011 school year began on August 24, 2010, and will end on June 9, 2011, if no emergency days are used.

Athletics

Niles North competes in the Central Suburban League and Illinois High School Association. Its mascot is the Viking. Recently the legality of the Viking mascot and its depiction on school grounds and articles has come under dispute due to the image's extreme similarity to that of the NFL team Minnesota Vikings. In the summer of 2007 the school's football field was updated with synthetic turf.

Extra-curricular awards and recognition

  • For the fifth year in a row, the student newspaper, The North Star, won the "International First Place award from Quill and Scroll" (for the 2005–2006 school year).[9]
  • Niles North High School was named "National History Day Illinois School of the Year" at the annual Illinois History Expo held May 3, 2006, in Springfield.[10]
  • The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts recently chose District 219 for the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network and National School Boards Association award.[11]
  • Niles North's Theatre Department is internationally recognized, having been invited to the American High School Theatre Festival four times, in 2003 for their production of Hamlet, in 2006 for an original production entitled Dysfunction, in 2008 for their production of Falsettoland, and in 2011 for their production of a Mask Showcase called "Hide and Seek". Locally, the department is frequently invited to perform productions at the Illinois High School Theatre Festival.
  • During the 2003–2004 school year, Professor Shozo Sato guest directed a kabuki production at Niles North entitled The Monstrous Spider.
  • In 2007, Niles North won an "Outstanding High School Environmental Club" Award from the Illinois Recycling Association.
