Character Overview

Introduced in the pilot episode, the character is presented as a privileged girl with many underlying layers. Though she is not officially labeled as such, various media outlets have cited Naomi as the series' lead.[1][2]

90210

Season 1

Naomi is introduced as a rich girl who attends West Beverly Hills High School. Her first on-screen birthday coincides with the birth of the series, during which several aspects of the character's personality are introduced.[3]

Self-esteem is shown to be one of Naomi's biggest virtues and vices early on. When she is assigned to work with new student Annie Wilson, she initially appears snobbish and withdrawn. Afterward, she displays a friendlier side as the two spend time together, but also reveals an opportunistic nature by attempting to plagiarize one of Annie's papers. Upon being caught, however, Naomi becomes offended when others express doubts about her ability, and seeks to prove that she can complete the work herself.[3]

Monogamy is also shown to be of much importance to Naomi in the first episode[3] (and during various matters in the episodes to follow).[4] When her personal life is explored, she displays a deep capacity for love and commitment, valuing her longtime boyfriend Ethan Ward. However, her birthday party is disrupted by the news that Ethan has been unfaithful to her.[3]

Social power is also said to be a priority of Naomi's in the pilot, along with social prominence. According to Erin Silver, the two were best friends in middle school until in eighth grade when Naomi revealed the secret that Silver's Dad Mel had an affair, something Silver had told her in confidence and subsquently broke up the Silver family.[3]

Several of the foundations laid in the pilot are built upon as the series progresses. In the third episode, Naomi is deeply hurt by the discovery that her father is having an affair.[4] In episode 4, she is shown to maintain a close relationship with Ethan, despite their break-up, turning to him for comfort. She again reveals her friendly nature when she pacifies Ethan's autistic brother.[5] Later, she is presented with an opportunity to confront her father's mistress, and boldly does so.[6] She and Erin Silver also take steps toward reconciliation. Afterward, Naomi strives to save her parents' marriage, though her efforts are ultimately in vain.[7] When her friend Adrianna encounters problems due to her drug habit, Naomi's good will is revealed again, as she eventually steps in and attempts to intervene.[8]

Naomi Clark is often compared to Kelly Taylor of Beverly Hills, 90210.

Though their personalities differ at times, several of Naomi's issues parallel those of Kelly Taylor from the original series.[9][10] Early on in the show, she values her "in-crowd" status and experiences repeated friction with a friend over a boy. When Annie begins bonding with Ethan, Naomi reveals that the situation is likely to interfere with their friendship. Annie's eventual dismissal of this statement leads to a temporary rift between the girls.[11] Also like Kelly, Naomi endures the experience of a family torn apart by adultery, and is later faced with the matter of an absent parent, as her mother departs town unexpectedly. After her parents have officially split, Naomi seeks temporary refuge in a hotel.

Later, Naomi becomes attracted to a bartender named Liam Court in the hotel that she stays in, and sends him a bottle of champagne when she mistakenly assumes that he is older. Naomi discovers that the bartender was actually her age and working without his mother's knowledge, and she inadvertently blew his cover, getting him sent to West Beverly Hills High School. Naomi then begins having erotic dreams about Liam. Naomi and Liam have a strained relationship at first, with him blaming her for getting him sent to school, but they start to get to know each other when Naomi agrees to become Liam's math tutor. He takes her to a drag race, and when she is forcefully hit on by a street racer and Liam punches the racer and destroys his car. He then takes Naomi back to school, where they kiss in his car for the first time. Later on, however, Liam begins keeping her at a distance, appearing to only be interested in a physical relationship. During the prom, he reluctantly reveals his honest feelings to her and states that he really does like her. At Naomi's after-party, Jen, her sister, seduces Liam to get back at Naomi for disobeying her, because Jen didn't give Naomi approval for arranging the party at the house. Naomi catches the aftermath (sans Jen) and finds Annie's wrap with Liam, causing her to publicly accuse Annie of sleeping with Liam. She is last shown being comforted by Jen after finding out about Annie and Liam's "betrayal", while police sirens are heard in the background due to Annie calling the police to inform them of underage drinking.[12] There were many bottles of vodka in the courtyard of the house.

Season 2

Naomi has become closer to Silver and Adrianna over summer break, whilst attending Summer School because Annie busted her post Prom party when she called the cops.[13]
