Template:Infobox Ottoman Sultan Mehmed Murad V (Ottoman Turkish: مراد خامس) (September 21/22 1840 - 29 August 1904) was the 33rd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire who reigned from 30 May to 31 August 1876.

He was born at Istanbul, Topkapı Palace. His father was Abdülmecid I. His mother, whom his father married in Istanbul on 1 August 1839, was Valide Sultan Shevkefza, (Poti, 12 December 1820 - Istanbul, Ortaköy, Çırağan Palace, 17 September 1889), originally named Vilma, a Circassian. He was born at Çırağan Palace, Ortaköy, Istanbul.

Reign

Murad became the Sultan when his uncle Abdülaziz was deposed. He was highly influenced by French culture. He reigned for 93 days before being deposed on the grounds that he was mentally ill.[1] He failed to deliver the Constitution that his supporters had sought, and under his reign the country moved closer to the disastrous war with Russia, then-ruled by Alexander II.

Upon hearing that Abdülaziz had died, Murad fainted and after regaining consciousness vomited for a day and a half.[1]

He died at Çırağan Palace, Ortaköy, Istanbul, and was buried in Istanbul on 30 August 1904. His brother, Abdul Hamid II, ascended to the throne on 31 August 1876.[1]
