Mt. Eden High School is a high school located inside the city of Hayward, California. It is part of the Hayward Unified School District.

Information about Mt. Eden High School

Mt Eden High School is the home of 2060 students and 105 staff members. Mt. Eden is a 1996 California Distinguished School. Mt. Eden is located in San Francisco's East Bay community of Hayward in the southern most area of the city. The high school is part of the Hayward Unified School District. The mission of the district is to enable all students to recognize and strive to fulfill their potential as caring, thinking, productive, contributing, and responsible participants in our changing world. Built in 1960, Mt. Eden is proud of the diversity of its student body and all staff members work hard to meet the ever-changing needs of our school community. With 40 different languages at the school, 29% of Mt. Eden's student body is Limited English Speaking. The staff at Mt. Eden High School believes in providing each student with a variety of opportunities, including the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in our democratic society, developing a sense of pride and respect toward self, family, school and community, and developing maximum proficiency in all areas of curriculum.[4]

School structure

Mt. Eden consists of nine halls: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K, L, J, M, Q Art Halls, and portables; one cafeteria; two locker rooms (one for boys and one for girls); a quad in the middle of the campus; a gym; a football field; a track; a large field; and four tennis courts. There are also two on-site parking lots: one for students, located in the back of the campus, and one mainly intended for teachers, located in front of the main office.

Mt. Eden High School adopted a closed-campus policy for the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years as well as for the upcoming 2009-2010.

Courses

Mt. Eden offers a variety of classes that students may choose from. Among these are foreign languages, art classes, math classes, and English classes. Mt. Eden also offers sheltered, accelerated, Advanced Placement, and Honors classes.

Extra-curricular activities

Sports

Mt. Eden offers many extra-curricular activities. Their athletic program includes Cheerleading, Boys' and Girls' Tennis, Girls' Volleyball, Football, Badminton, Softball,Boys' and Girl's Soccer,Boys' and Girls' Basketball,Baseball,Swimming,Wrestling,Cross Country, and Track and Field. The badminton team has been undefeated; winning HAAL's for the past decade and placing in NCS.

Organizations/Clubs

Many organizations and groups exist within school. Many clubs are also commonly found within the school ranging across many different tastes and attitudes among the student body.

Fine arts

Mt. Eden offers a plethora of fine arts programs. Under the Direction of Kevin Cato, the award winning Instrumental Music Program at Mt. Eden features Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble (one of the top Concert groups in the U.S.), Orchestra, Marching Band, Drumline, Jazz Combo, Pep Band, Chamber Groups and Percussion Ensemble. Mr. Cato directs his program using collegiate level music. The marching band was featured in a Coca-Cola commercial in December 2005. In April 2006 the band took the gold and the Sweepstates award at the Heritage Music Festival in Honolulu. In 2007 the Wind Ensemble was invited and performed at Boston Symphony Hall in Boston Massachusetts, placing 5th out of 20 Concert groups invited from across the country. After a successful year in 2008, including 1st Place wins in Hawaii and across Northern California, the Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform at the world - renowned Carnegie Hall in New York City, as a part of the National Invitational Band and Orchestra Festival, in April 2009. Under the direction of Courtney Marshall the Dance Department features Stage Left; Mt. Eden's Dance team. Mt Eden also has a superb Vocal Music Association. For over 18 years, under the direction of Ken Rawdon, the Mt Eden Vocal Music Association has thrived throughout the state of California as well as the Nation. Mt Edens choirs have won numerous awards and are considered one of Northern California's finest vocal programs. The choirs perform on the home front in Hayward at least four times a year in concerts that include both a Winter and Spring Concert, a POPS concert and dessert theatre (cabaret). In The Mt Eden High School Vocal Music Association consists of 7 choirs including Concert Choir, Mens Choir, Women's Choir, Women's Chamber Ensemble, Chamber Singers, Monarch Mirage Show Choir, and the Deja Bluez Jazz Ensemble. A description of each choir is below.

Concert Choir

The MEHS Concert Choir is the centerpiece of the entire program. It is the combination of all choir classes at Mt. Eden. Every student in every vocal music class is a member of this choir regardless of which choir they are enrolled in. This choir performs concert literature of all kinds: secular, sacred, contemporary, multi-cultural, etc. They perform the classics of great choral music by the master composers and perform in numerous languages. All students in the concert choir participate in the winter, spring, pops concerts, dessert theaters, HUSD all-district music festival, ACDA and CMEA choral festivals throughout the school year. They also perform at many collegiate-level invitational choral festivals and competitions in California.
