Midnight Sun is an expected companion novel to the book Twilight by author Stephenie Meyer [1] It will be a retelling of the events of Twilight, but written from the perspective of Edward Cullen as opposed to that of Bella Swan. Although Meyer plans on having it published, there are not yet any immediate plans for this to occur. This book is Meyer's next project following the fourth novel of the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn.[2] Meyer has stated that Midnight Sun is the only book from the Twilight series that she plans to rewrite from Edward's perspective.[3] To give them a better feel of Edward's character, Meyer allowed Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the upcoming film adaptation of Twilight, and Robert Pattinson, the actor playing Edward, to read some completed chapters of the novel while they filmed the movie.[4] As of August 28, 2008, Meyer has halted the writing of Midnight Sun indefinately due to the illegal leak of 12 chapters of the unfinished manuscript. She has made available the leaked chapters on her website in fairness to her readers now that the original copy has been compromised before the intended publication.[5]

Plot introduction

The plot of Midnight Sun will be parallel to Twilight, beginning with the first time Edward Cullen sees Bella Swan and leading up to the end of their prom night. The first chapter of this novel (which is still subject to changes by the author) can be found on Meyer's official website.[6] The edited version of this first chapter has also been included in the UK release of Meyer's first adult novel, The Host, when purchased at a Borders store. Also, in Australia and in Italy, it has been included in the special edition of Twilight.

Stephenie Meyer has revealed that although the events in Midnight Sun are parallel to those in Twilight, Midnight Sun will be much longer because of Edward's tendency to overthink things.[7]

Stephenie Meyer has stopped work on Midnight Sun due to the leak of the first 12 chapters. She says work is indefinitely suspended so she can spend time with her family and work on other writing projects.[8]
