Tyler Perry's House of Payne (2006-) |
Tyler Perry's "Meet the Browns" is a sitcom developed by Tyler Perry, which premiered on Wednesday, January 7, 2009[2] on TBS. It is made in the model of his play and film of the same name. The show stars David Mann and Tamela Mann, who starred in the earlier stage play and motion picture.
Leroy Brown (David Mann) as he transforms his inherited, ramshackle house into Brown Meadows, a senior citizen home. Brown gets more than he bargained for with eccentric residents, employees trying to keep their lives on track, and the fraternity next door.
Cast
- David Mann as Leroy Brown: Mr. Brown is in his mid-60s. He is a dimwitted church deacon who's very proud of being saved. He is widowed. Mr. Brown has a brother and a sister, and is father to daughter Cora Simmons. Cora's mother is said to be "Madea" Simmons (Tyler Perry), with whom Mr. Brown had a one-night stand. Brown is caring and giving, and his simple mix-up of words often leaves people in stitches, though Cora is famous for correcting his mispronunciations. He is shown to be over-protective of Cora when she begins dating, making it appear as if it's her first time, thus, questioning the existence of her daughters who have appeared in the plays, and also, any past relationship, if any, with their "unnamed" father.
- Tamela Mann as Cora Simmons: Cora Simmons is the 40 something daughter of Mr. Brown, and a praying woman that's very active in her church. But don’t cross her - she might use her fist instead of her “anointed touch”. She is normally the voice of reason among the Browns, but shows in the episode "Meet the Dangerous and the Deadline" that she can resort to violence when it comes to protecting her family from threats much like her mother Madea. Cora is shown to have two adult daughters in other adaptations containing her character, however, they seem to be non-existent in the series. When Cora begins dating, the characters approach it as her first time, and her past relationship with the unnamed father of her daughters, as well as the existence of her daughters themselves, is completely overlooked.
- Denise Boutte as Nurse Sasha Brown: Sasha is in her late 20’s, and was in an abusive relationship with the father of her five-year-old son, but she's now married and working alongside her husband Will Brown. It was revealed in the episode "Meet the Dangerous and the Deadline" that she had an abusive relationship with a boyfriend prior to meeting Will that resulted in her being hospitalized.
- Lamman Rucker as Dr. Will Brown: Will Brown is in his early ‘30s, and he's a gynecologist who’s married to Sasha. He is Mr. Brown’s nephew and helps out by providing free medical services to the residents of Mr. Brown's home.
- K Callan as Daisy LaRue: A former B-movie actress who was big in her day (in her own mind). She really misses her former career so she tries to hold onto it in every way possible. Due to her acting career, she has lots of money, but she’s very cheap. In fact, whenever someone talks to her about money or anything else she doesn’t want to talk about, she goes into “character” to avoid the conversation. She never married, but she has dated the best of them.
- Tony Vaughn as Colonel Cleophus Jackson: A former Marine who's also oversexed and likes to use the bathroom outside in the bushes. He’s a very disciplined man who is always very formal and very official acting as if he were still in the Marines to the point that it scares Mr. Brown. Underneath his hard exterior however, he has a soft heart. His wife died several years ago and he’s estranged from his daughter, Karen, who is his only child.
- Antonio Jaramillo as Jesus Hernandez: The competent eye-candy handyman of "Brown Meadows". His name is a reference to the fact that many latin men have the preferred name Jesus. He has a crush on Carmen Martinez. Mr. Brown once believed him to be homosexual by using the phrase in the closet and out of the closet in the episode "Meet Your Maker".
- Juanita Jennings as Edna Wright Barnes Grey Foster: A nice-looking senior who claims she's only 35. In one episode, she describes herself as "a friend" who was a both smart and beautiful girl who felt too grown to be taken care of. She later runs away, and spend eighteen years with an abusive pimp. Miss Edna was one of eight children and she had a younger brother named Wilbur. In 1962 she married the love of her life, Emmitt Barnes. After six months, he died in bed with a smile on his face. Later she was married Willie Leroy Grey, owner of Grey's Funeral Homes, for nearly two years until he died in the rest room joining the Mile High Club with a smile on his face. She later married an Captain Odell Foster, an airline pilot, who died after five years dying on home plate at Yankee Stadium with a smile on his face.
- Arielle Vandenberg as London Sheridan: A spoiled celebrity/heiress who Mr. Brown invites to live at Brown Meadows to serve her community service for a DUI conviction. She is an obvious parody of Paris Hilton, down to the ditzy demeanor and frivolous spending and name of the character (London/Paris and Sheridan/Hilton). London is a dim-witted, spoiled, rich young adult with a growing rivalry with Daisy LaRue over who will be the house diva. London might also be a reference to London Tipton from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody who is also a dim-witted, spoiled, yet younger, hotel heiress, and an obvious parody of Paris Hilton.
- Gunnar Washington as Joaquin: A 10 years old who is Brianna’s half-brother. A foster child who comes from a broken home. He and Brianna have been moved from foster home to foster home. As a result, he is anxious to find a good home and be settled. Joaquin is a smart, adorable, loving little boy who sometimes lets his mischievous ways get him into lots of trouble. Overall, he just wants to be loved. He finds Colonel Jackson's stories to be interesting
- Brianne Gould as Brianna: A 15 year old foster child who comes from a broken home, and an unsafe foster environment. She’s very bright and knows the foster care system well. Because of her tragic childhood, Brianna has developed anger problems and often carries a chip on her shoulder. Feeling she and her half-brother, Joaquin, are alone in the world, it is the only relationship she nurtures. She initially tries to run away but develops a relationship with Miss Edna through Miss Edna's past experiences. in "Meet the Truth" it is revealed that her mistrust for adults and frequent rage is the result of being sexually molested by her mother's boyfriend.
- Jeanette Sousa as Carmen Martinez: A social worker for Brianna and Joaquin, two foster kids who are temporarily staying at Brown Meadows. Carmen is good friends with Sasha. She initially helps the Browns by starting the legal paperwork to turn the Brown home into a retirement home and by placing Miss Edna and Colonel Jackson in Brown Meadows after they were kicked out of a nearby retirement home. She later helps the Browns try to locate the residents' family members when the Browns try to throw a Family Day celebration.
