Max[4] is a 2024 Indian Kannada-language action thriller film directed by Vijay Karthikeyaa and jointly produced by Kalaippuli S. Thanu under V Creations and Sudeepa under Kichcha Creations. The film stars Sudeepa in titular role, alongside an ensemble cast of Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Samyukta Hornad, Sukrutha Wagle and Anirudh Bhat.[5] The music is composed by B. Ajaneesh Loknath, while cinematography and editing were handled by Shekar Chandra and S. R. Ganesh Baabu.[6][7][8]

Premise

Inspector Arjun Mahakshay reports to duty at a new police station after a two-month suspension, but he soon faces an unexpected situation and sets out to save the cops using brute force within 12 hours.

Sudeepa officially announced his collaboration with Kalaipuli S. Thanu in May 2023, almost a year after his previous release of Vikrant Rona.[10][11] A teaser of was released in July 2023, where it was revealed that it would be directed by debutant Vijay Karthikeyaa and music will be composed by B. Ajaneesh Loknath.[12] Samyukta Hornad and Sukrutha Wagle were reported to be part of the cast, which was later confirmed by the team.[13] Later it was also reported that Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, who was last paired with Sudeepa in Maanikya, is also in the film.[14][15]

Filming

The film went on floors in the month of July 2023.[16][17] Majority of the film was shot in and around Mahabalipuram.[18] While Chetan D'souza composed most of the action sequences, It was also reported that Kevin Kumar of Jailer fame had also shot an action sequence.[19] While the shooting of the film was underway, the film faced the wrath of Chennai Floods, which meant the shooting was halted.[20][7][21] The shooting began and the action sequences were wrapped up in May 2024.[22][23]

There were many big names being considered for the film, but B. Ajaneesh Loknath, who had previously collaborated with Sudeepa in Vikrant Rona, was selected to compose music for the film.[24] The first single, titled "Maximum Mass", released on 2 September 2024, coinciding with Sudeepa's 52nd birthday.[25] The second single, titled "Lion's Roar", released on 15 December 2024.[26]

Marketing

The film's initial teaser was released on 2 July 2023 by an announcement from the makers. Later, on the occasion of Sudeepa's birthday the film's title MAX was revealed.[27] The official teaser was subsequently released in Kannada, alongside Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam languages on 16 July 2024.[28]

Max was theatrically released on 25 December 2024, coinciding with Christmas in Kannada, alongside Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam languages.[29]

Critical response

Sridevi S of The Times of India gave 3.5/5 stars and wrote "The thing about action genre movies are, at the end of the day, it is either boom or bust. Max goes boom, with all guns blazing, providing a much-needed theatrical experience, thus, ending the year for KFI, with a big bang."[30] Shashiprasad SM of Times Now gave 3.5/5 stars and wrote "The sole purpose of this film is to showcase Kichcha Sudeepa in his ultimate form, delivering a high-octane, action-packed experience without unnecessary drama."[31] Prathibha Joy of OTT Play gave 3.5/5 stars and wrote "Debutant director Vijay Kartikeyaa’s Max is a racy thriller that’s well- crafted and perfect for Kiccha Sudeep, who is front and centre of the film. There are a lot of moments that play to the gallery and yet, they never go overboard in catering to Sudeep’s star image."[32]

Sanjay Ponnappa of India Today gave 3/5 stars and wrote "While Max leans heavily on Kichcha Sudeep’s star power, its sharp screenplay and brisk pacing elevate it beyond the realm of a typical commercial entertainer. The film strikes a balance between mass appeal and an engaging narrative."[33]
