Locnville

Locnville are a South African new age, electro-hop music duo.[2] Twin brothers Andrew and Brian Chaplin established the duo in Cape Town, South Africa in 2009.[2] The band are currently under contract with their own record label Just Music and South African label Contra-Banned.[2] The duo are singer-songwriters, song producers and musicians, in addition to being: guitarists, drummers and business entrepreneurs.[3]

Biography

Early life

Andrew and Brian Chaplin were born as identical twin brothers, Brian first, to a South African father and American mother in New York, United States.[3][2] The twins are related to the late Charlie Chaplin, with their great grandfather being the brother of Charlie Chaplin's father.[3] In an interview, Andrew explained his take on the perceptions Locnville garnered as a result of their relation to Charlie Chaplin: "For people that know Charlie Chaplin and what his ethos was, I would definitely say that the relation affects their view of us. In terms of whether it has affected our success or not, I'm not too sure. If it did, I would hope it's for the best!"[4] Although being American-born, the Chaplin twins have lived and been raised in Cape Town, South Africa for the majority of their lives.[1]

Andrew and Brian discovered their passion for music at the age of six when they got their first guitars.[2] As kids, they were largely influenced by the music by bands Pink Floyd and Oasis who were regularly played by their parents.[3] Andrew elaborated in an interview: "Our family was pretty musically orientated, so I think we got a pretty good sense of melody and rhythm from a young age."[4]

Musical beginnings

Locnville started "busking" around Cape Town at a very young age and as a result they obtained substantial funding which led them to record their first single entitled "Amnesia" at the age of eight.[1] Between ages eight and twelve, the Chaplin twins' were on a rock-influenced genre due to Brian playing percussion and Andrew guitar.[2]

In 2001 at the age of eleven, the brothers moved back to the United States where they started to pick up a new influence of hip hop music into their musical style as they were not able to play their own instruments because of sound restrictions, so they started downloading hip hop instrumentals and writing to them.[1][4] The two later moved back to Cape Town, South Africa, where they then started to focus solely on hip hop and rap music.[2]

In 2005, at the age of fifteen, the duo performed publicly for the first time at the "2005 Hip Hop Indaba" in which they were the youngest contenders, this participation was the origin of the group's fanbase and as a result they were later featured on television for the first time on popular South African channel, e.tv's "The Showbiz Report".[1] The pair later made a second appearance on the show after contracting with the channel.[1] At this stage, Locnville were in the process of recording their first demo tape, which was of hip hop influence and entitled "Making a Name for Us".[2] A track from the demo tape entitled "What If I Said" then became an underground success in the youth music market of Cape Town, to the extent that it attracted the attention of award-winning and acclaimed South African music producer, Gabi Le Roux.[1]

III

In 2006 Andrew and Brian were introduced to Gabi Le Roux, who is well-known for many multi-platinum, platinum and gold-selling albums, co-composing and producing massive anthems like Mandoza’s ‘Nkalakatha’ and working with a score of iconic South African artists, including the likes of Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa. He conceived an idea to put them together with an African singer/rapper to make the fusion of hip-hop, rock, kwaito and RnB complete. This immediately resulted in the recruitment of Khayelitsha-based artist, Given Phike and the group III was formed. III released their twelve-track hip-hop/rock/kwaito compilation album, ‘What They Say’, live on MXit on 21 August 2007.[5] ‘What They Say’ went on to achieve double platinum download sales status, and made them the first group in South African music history to release an album in this format.[6]

The birth of Locnville

Despite the success with III Andrew and Brian were never really satisfied until the birth of Locnville. “We wanted to make the kind of music we enjoyed listening to, music that was commercially viable as well as music that could be accepted internationally - that’s what inspired Locnville and the album. We combined elements of the music we like and altered it to make it our own” – Andrew comments.[7] How they picked the name, Locnville “Is quite a long story” says Andrew” but basically it’s a metaphorical way of saying that we have both American and South African influences in our lives.”[8]

Their debut album, first released on a format called VirtualCD, a concept created by Andrew and Brian in association with Side B Flash Animation and Contra-Banned, is called ‘Retro Electro’ and was released digitally in November 2009. As Locnville describe – “the VirtualCD is the newest innovation in online music distribution where you can view all the relevant aspects of a hard copy album, like artwork, etc, but enhanced with extras like Locnville’s Twitter feed, the latest music videos and more”.[9] Brian commented, “We came up with The VirtualCD concept around the same time that we were recording the album, so when it was done we figured we’d be the first to release our debut in the VirtualCD format and see how people took to it.[10] The album was recorded and mixed at LMX Studios in Cape Town.[11] Brian commented, “It took about 2 weeks to record everything. We actually produced the entire album, so everything you hear from Locnville is 100% Locnville”.[12]

The hardcopy edition of the album is titled “Sun In My Pocket” and was released in South Africa in February 2010 through Just Music, a leading South African independent label, to whom Locnville signed in November 2009.[13] The Deluxe Edition has completely new artwork and all of the tracks have been re-mastered in the United Kingdom by Ministry of Sound’s Wez Clarke.[14] In addition, the Deluxe Edition contains a selection of international remixes of their first two singles “Sun In My Pocket” (7 remixes) and “6 Second Poison” (4 remixes) from the likes of Lazee, Wez Clarke, Libex, VinD and Grammy nominated remixer StoneBridge as well as an album megamix mixed by Joker. The Platinum Edition of the album, released in South Africa in May 2010, contains two previously unreleased tracks “I Go Left” and “Magic” and two remixes of their third single “There” by Wez Clarke and D.O.N.S. The bonus DVD contains a documentary titled “The Locknville Story” as well as music videos for their first three singles.

Charting success in South Africa

Locnville have made South African chart history by becoming the highest charting debut album ever from a South African artist on the Musica Album charts.[15] They also peaked at #1 on the official RISA South African Albums Chart and reached Gold Status (20 000 units) in the first month of release.[16]

Going Global

In May 2010, News24 reported that Locnville signed a worldwide deal with Sony Music International. Locnville's debut single and album, both entitled "Sun In My Pocket", will be released around the world on Sony's Jive Records imprint, except in the United Kingdom where it will be released on Sony"s Epic Records imprint.[17]
