The following is a list of cities in Japan by population. The following table indicates all cities in Japan that have a population greater than 200,000 as of the 2010 Japan Census.[1][2] Prefectural capitals are indicated in bold. Japan has many major cities. Many of these cities are crowded into a relatively small area of land along the Pacific coast of Honshu, between Tokyo and Fukuoka. This heavily urbanized strip is known as the Taiheiyō Belt. It is named after the historic highway that connected the cities of Tokyo and Kyoto, which has now been replaced by expressways and the high-speed Shinkansen railway line ("Bullet Train").
