Born in the bush, Corryong Victoria, on the foothills of the Snowy Mountains high country is where Lee’s life began. The son of a truck driver and later multi platinum recording artist Ray Kernaghan, Lee spent his formative years growing up in the Riverina country of Southern NSW. Lee’s Grandfather was a third generation drover of sheep and cattle and his experiences on the road with his Pop ran deep, producing a string of hits that began with the release of his first album the ARIA award winning ‘Outback Club’ in 1992. His first number one hit ‘Boys from the Bush’ became an anthem, a celebration of a way of life that would change the face of Australian country music forever.
Lee Kernaghan grew up in the [[Riverina]] region of [[New South Wales]], and his first public performance was on the Chickadees radio singing "Two Little Boys" by [[Rolf Harris]] in 1969. The years rolled by and in 1975 Lee, his brother Greg and friend Glen Simpson formed the band "The Blue Devils." He won the prestigious Starmaker quest in Tamworth as a youngster but it wasn't until 1986 things started shaping up. He had just performed at Fanfair in Nashville and Through songwriter Reece Kirk-Lee met with [[Garth Porter]] and the two become lifelong friends and work mates. Garth managed to rope a bit of money from Warner Chappell and they recorded his first solo LP.Played in pubs until he was 15

Throughout his career Lee Kernaghan has dominated the charts with successive hit albums including ‘Three Chain Road’, ‘1959’, ‘Hat Town’, ‘Electric Rodeo’, ‘The New Bush’ and his most recent #1 album ‘Spirit Of The Bush’. In early 2000 Lee was awarded the title of Hit Maker of the Decade in recognition of the unprecedented chart success he enjoyed during the 90’s. Not only did Lee achieve more number one hits than any other artist during the 90’s he also began creating a new musical landscape in country music along the way. He has done to country music in Australia what Garth Brooks did in the USA.....he blurred the line and took country music out of the box that it had existed in for decades....he added a spectacular live show and along the way has sold over one million albums, won 27 Golden Guitars, 3 Aria Awards, 26 number 1 hits and 9 hit albums.
The release of “The Outback Club” in 1992 was a defining point in Lee's music career, not only beginning his long career but also reviving the dream he had given up in the Christmas of 1990. As Lee recalls "I’d given it the last ten years of my life, pretty well full on and I was doing shows like the Carriers Arms in Wodonga and nobody turned up. Not a soul.” Lee's mate had real estate agency and Lee traded his R.M. Williams for a suit tried to settle down. He was nearly 27 years old and borrowing money from his Dad. After co-writing "Boys from the Bush" with Garth he went back to Albury while Garth looked for a deal. Many turned Lee down, one saying the song was too sexist. Finally ABC signed him and the rest is history.

Lee Kernaghan has become a towering figure in Australian country music and a fine ambassador for his craft. Lee has a passion for his music and his country and brings these together in his support for country communities across Australia. To many people he represents the very essence of the spirit and values of contemporary rural Australia. In the past ten years his ‘Pass the Hat Around’ tours have raised more than a million dollars for communities in need and his participation in the ‘Spirit of the Bush’ tours raises spirits as well as money for farming families doing it tough in the drought.
In 2007, Lee received four Golden Guitars for his album, "The New Bush", bringing his total CMAA Awards to 25 and his number one songs to 22. Lee also received a CMA award for 'Best Global artist' in 2003.

On [[25 January]] 2008, Lee was awarded the [[Australian of the Year Award]] for 2008.
Lee was named the 2008 Australian of the Year by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in Canberra on 25th January. The following day he travelled to Tamworth for the Australian Country Music Awards where he picked up 3 more Golden Guitars for his smash hit song Spirit Of The Bush.

Lee Kernaghan will be doing selective shows during 2009. He is recording a new album for a late 2009 release. His career is going from strength to strength. His connection to rural Australia grows stronger and stronger and his love and care for this country and its people is one of the reasons he has been recognised as one of Australia’s favourite sons.

The Lee Kernaghan Fan Club

THE OUTBACK CLUB. From about 1995 Stan and Dorothy Roberts ran what was called "The Outback Club - The Official Lee Kernaghan Fan Club". Stan and Dorothy, Lee's Uncle and Aunty, are the parents of Steve JW Roberts [Lee's PA]. Stanley Roberts and Pamela Kernaghan (ni Roberts) are the children of Lee's late grandmother Myrtle Roberts.

Back then the fan club members received, about 4 times a year in the post, a typed newsletter detailing Lee's activities, pen pal requests, tour dates, occassionally a letter from Lee, concert reviews and so on. Most of those "Letters From Lee" have recently been added to the outback Club section of Lee's website

Up until early 2000, Stan and Dorothy also handled Lee's merchandising at his shows and so travelled extensively with him. They also ran, via the newsletter a regular competition where you could win for example, a shirt worn on tour by Lee.

Members also received an annual members kit which contained an official membership card, an Outback Club badge, various photos of Lee, an Outback Club calendar, a bumper sticker, official biography and an Outback Club folder. There was a small annual fee payable to cover the operating costs.

During 1999, Lee's first official presence on the Internet came into being with the setting up of the domain http://www.leekernaghan.com.au - this was set up by Steve JW.

At the end of 2000 Stan and Dorothy handed over the reins of the Outback Club to Steve JW, the newly appointed Outback Club National President and LK Webmaster.

From 2001, the Outback Club members received, upon paying an annual subscribtion fee, glossy, professionally published members magazines, Outback Club membership card, badge and certificate as well as access to a "Members Only" section on Lee's official website.

This Members Only area, which required your membership number and a password to access, contained various rare audio tracks, Lee's video clips, some downloads, online puzzles, and assorted other items.

Lee's website also contained sections covering i.e. current news, a timeline, a list of his awards, a photo gallery and a biography - these areas were accessible to anyone, not just Outback Club members.

There was also a Lee Kernaghan forum on the Miscrosoft Network [MSN], run by Steve JW and open to both members and non-members of The Outback Club

During 2004 Ashleigh Judge was appointed as Vice-President of The Outback Club to assist Steve.

In mid 2005 a decision was made, due to the production costs and the time involved in running The Outback Club, and with the flexibility of the internet, to close the old snail mail based system, and develop a new online environment for the fans.

From 2004 to 2006 a lot of changes were made to the layout and content of the website which included amongst other things, intergrating the new LK Forum with the website.

From mid 2005, while it was no longer a paid membership club, to be considered an "Outback Club Member" you needed to be registered as member. This involved signing up and being provided with a username and password for the restricted access "Outback Club" area of Lee's website.

In May 2006 Lee's entire website was rebuilt to take advantage of new online technologies available.

In the process of upgrading the website, much of what was previously available was lost and also the restricted access area of the website ("The Outback Club") was opened up and made available to everyone. Most of what was lost during the rebuilding, plus material lost during the 2004 - 2006 period has recently been recovered and added to the "Outback Club area of the website.

In June 2006, Ashleigh was appointed as the new President of The Outback Club with the former President, Steve JW, taking on the role of Lee's Personal Assistant on a full-time basis. The Outback Club also has 2 moderators who also dedicated a lot of time and effort to help in looking after the forum and oversee its happenings, Don and Tracy (TLW80) and there help is greatly appreciated.

So, what is neccessary to be considered a member of Lee Kernaghan's Outback Club in it's current form?

Simple - All registered members of The LK Forum are also recognised as being "Outback Club" members

And what is "The Outback Club"?

The Outback Club consists of two parts - The "LK Forum" and the "Outback Club" section of Lee's website.

The LK Forum requires that you be a registered member to read and contribute to the topics.

The Outback Club section of Lee's website is open to all, and while no registration is required to enter, it is recommended.

There are plans to integrate the LK Forum and The Outback Club so only one registration is required

Collaborations

Lee Kernaghan is a talented songwriter and wrote many of the songs, as well as taking part personally, in the live stage production of "The Man from Snowy River: Arena Spectacular". He gave an impressive performance as "the Balladeer", narrating the story of the Arena Spectacular, and also sang some of his own songs, and songs he co-wrote with Garth Porter. Songs written by Lee Kernaghan (and songs written by Lee Kernaghan with Garth Porter) which were heard during the Arena Spectacular included: "Spirit of the High Country", "Southern Son", "Snowy Mountains Buck Jump", "The Rope That Pulls the Wind", "Kosciusko Moon", "Boys From the Bush", "Pull the Other One Mate", "Electric Rodeo", "Cobar Line" and "You Rock My World". "A Handful of Dust" can be heard on the Original Cast Album (which won the ARIA award for Best Cast / Show Album).[1]

Lee has also collaborated with many artists over the years and the can be heard on many of his albums. Artists include, Slim Dusty, Smoky Dawson, Travis Sinclair, Tania Kernaghan, Adam Brand, Troy Casser-Daly, Steve Forde, Anne Kirkpatrick, Catherine Britt, Olivia Newton-John, The McClymonts, the Sunny Cow Girls and Trisha Yearwood.

Lee was also featured in a joke collaboration on Australian TV where he was supposed to be with the inept Aussie bushie-balladeer Russell Coight (Glenn Robbins) of All Aussie Adventures. In the scene, Coight is seen arriving at Kernaghan's farm to record a song with him. When Kernaghan realizes Coight is present, he rushes out the backdoor to his Land-Cruiser, and takes off.

On Tuesday 16th February he performed on It Take Two as a guest performance.

Family

Lee Kernaghan's father Ray and sister, Tania are also successful country musicians in Australia. Parents Ray and Pam Kernaghan (ni Roberts / Madison) and siblings Tania, Greg and Fiona.

Lee Kernaghan is married to Robby (Belinda); they have two sons, Jet and Rock (November 2002)[2]

Lee Kernaghan's father and sister influence him in his music when he was a young boy to now.Lee is such a family man he has own family and still has a music career.

Trivia

Lee considers his most embarrasing moment... It was the day I met Trisha Yearwood. Trisha and I recorded a duet called Save the Land to help raise money for drought stricken farmers. After the session I offered to drive Trisha and her tour manager back to her hotel. We all got into the car and as I backed out of the driveway I hit a pole and crunched in the left rear panel work of my car. Trisha got out of the car and said "Lee, I think we might catch a cab"

His second most embarrasing moment was doing an entire show at the West Tamworth Leagues Club with his fly (zipper) undone. Then seeing all the photos the fans sent to him proving it actually true.

Lee Kernaghan holds the record with in excess of 10 bras landing on stage during a performance at the Wagga Wagga University campus.

Lee Kernaghan appears in Allan M. Dixon's book Beaut Utes 4, describing his Toyota Landcruiser.
