The LNM Institute of Information Technology (LNMIIT) is a deemed university, located in Jaipur, India. [2]
Established in 2003, the institute operates as a not-for-profit organization under a public-private partnership between the Government of Rajasthan and the Lakshmi Niwas & Usha Mittal Foundation.[3] It was declared a Deemed University in 2006 under the De-Novo category of the UGC Act.[4]
LNMIIT offers engineering and allied programs approved by AICTE. Admission to all programs is strictly merit-based, with no provisions for capitation fees or management quotas, ensuring a transparent and equitable selection process.
History
[edit]Foundation & Early Years
[edit]As a deemed university, LNMIIT was jointly set up by the state government and the Lakshmi and Usha Mittal Foundation, as an autonomous non-profit organization. The institute was founded on 14th September 2002, In the initial months, lectures were held at a temporary campus in Jaipur,[5] before the infrastructure was ready at its present campus.
In under a year, The permanent campus was inaugurated on 1 May 2005 by the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Vasundhra Raje & Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, about 10 km from the Jaipur-Agra Highway and 20 km from the heart of Jaipur City. The first Director of the college was Vishwanath Sinha.
LNMIIT became a Deemed University established under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by notification from the commission on 29th June 2005. The initial intake was 30 students & Communication and Computer Engineering (CCE) was the first programme offered by the institute.
The institute started a Master of Science (M.S.) degree (by research) from June 2005.
Growth and Expansion
[edit]By 2006 the batch size had increased to 125 students and a Graduate programme was started.
In 2008, Two new UG programmes were introduced: Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) and student intake was increased to 180. The institute also added Master of Technology (M. Tech) and Ph D degrees. Along with a creation of the Mathematics department and a Humanities & Social Science department.
From 2009, B. Tech (Honors) and a five year Dual degree programme (B. Tech + M. Tech) were introduced with all three of the disciplines the institute was offering. Along with these LNMIIT introduced Engineering Physics (EP) and Mathematics via Information Technology (MIT) courses which were 4 year B.S. or 5 year dual B.S. + M.S.
By 2012 the intake had increased to 300 students across five disciplines. Along with this the institute also introduced the counselling cell (c-cell) for the campus.
In 2013 a new discipline was introduced namely Mechanical (Mechatronics) Engineering (MME) with 60 students as intake. As of March 2014, there were 63 members of faculty across all domains.
In 2015, another domain Mechanical Engineering (ME) was started in the institute. LNMIIT ranked as the third best private engineering college in the country by EDU-RAND.[6]
In 2021, LNMIIT Founder Lakshmi Niwas Mittal had approved an ambitious 7-year, 400 crore project under the name 'Mission Quantum Leap'. This project aims to bring about transformation of LNMIIT into one of the best research universities in its domain of choice in several new and current areas of relevance to the nation and society. In the first phase of the project a world class modern multidisciplinary center of research and development namely the 'LNMIIT International Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Data Science & Applications' (LICAI) would be constructed at a cost of 200 crores.[7][8]
