The Kembla Grange derailment occurred on the early morning of 20 October 2021 near Kembla Grange railway station, New South Wales, Australia.[1][2] The train derailed and collided at a level crossing, when a stolen van was placed in the middle of the crossing.[2]

Incident

[edit]

At approximately 4:00 am local time, a 47-year-old man stole a van and abandoned it on the level crossing at West Dapto Road, just due west of Kembla Grange railway station.[1] Then a northbound interurban Tangara train, set T42,[3] bound for Bondi Junction started approaching the railway station, the driver unaware of the van parked in the crossing ahead.[3][4] At approximately 4:10 am, the Tangara collided into the abandoned van, and the first car of the train derailed and tipped over as it hit the vehicle.[4][5] The second car of the Tangara also minorly derailed.[6] The third and fourth cars didn't derail and stayed on the track.[3] The first 000 call was made at 4:15 am, requesting for the fire brigade. They arrived shortly after. The driver and three of the ten passengers who were on board the train were taken to hospital.[5]
