K L University, officially the Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation, is a deemed university located in the Vaddeswaram Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh, India. K L University consists of 11 academic departments and six schools, with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological research.[1]

Established in 1980, the college is located on a 40 acres (16 ha) site adjacent to Buckingham Canal, and is about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from Vijayawada in Krishna District. The institution is recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi, has been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation and is certified by ISO 9001 - 2000. Recently it has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council with A grade.

History

The college was established in 1980 at Vaddeswaram by the late Sri Koneru Lakshmaiah and Sri K.Satyanarayana. Sri K. Lakshmaiah, who graduated from BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore, came up with the idea of establishing an engineering college in order to rectify the local scarcity of engineers. Sri K. Satyanarayana, also a graduate from BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore, has since taken over the reins as Chairman.

One of the main objectives of establishing the Institute was to develop facilities for studies in a variety of specialized engineering and technological sciences. Establishing adequate facilities for postgraduate studies and research was a focal point for the founding years. The institute has been recording 100% Placements for the past eight consecutive years. Once affiliated to Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, the college was granted autonomy in 2006.[2] It became a Deemed University in 2009,[2] and is now known as Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation.[3]

Departments

The college started with four programs in 1980, but now offers nine programmes in the undergraduate courses and five programmes in post-graduate courses. KLU is the first engineering college in Andhra Pradesh to start an Industrial and Production Engineering branch in undergraduate courses and to have an NBA accreditation for Biotechnology. It has a plinth area of 38045 m². The college has three computer centres catering to the computing needs of the students and staff.

Campus

K L University's 45 acres (18 ha) campus is located 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from Vijayawada, on the banks of the Buckingham Canal of Krishna River. The developed area is approximately 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m2).[2]

Student life

Cultural activities like drama, dancing and singing also feature in the life of a KLU student. The annual cultural festival, Surabhi, is held in February. It is a two-day event, featuring games, exhibitions, competitions and musical concerts.

The annual Science & Technology festival of KLUSO, Samyak, is held in October every year and is the largest of its kind in Andhra Pradesh. It comprises various events like competitions, exhibits and talks from guest speakers from around the world.

Apart from cultural and technological activities, the campus is also involved in business activities with bodies like The Entrepreneurship Cell, which supports the growth of start-up businesses across the globe.

These college festivals are organized, financially managed and conducted entirely by the students of the college. The Student Ordinate, KLUSO, organises the festivals. All these festivals and organizations are sponsored by private enterprises.

Academics

The faculty student ratio of 1:13 is the best in the state. Faculty of the college number 330, out of which sixty-one are doctorates and more than seventy-five are pursuing their PhD.

The Freshman Engineering Department helps first year undergraduate students adapt to the requirements of technical education. The Institute has a Communication and Soft Skills (CSS) Department, headed by professors and having more than twenty faculty members.

The Institute offers Bridge Courses to the students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds to make them competent to take up the courses on a par with other students. Emphasis is given on participation in the Hobby clubs. The Institute is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by DSIR, Government of India for its research environment.

Administration

Every department has 24 committees which administer activities and students are members of these committees. There is an advisory board in every school with academicians from IITs and foreign universities and eminent personalities from industry.

The Institute conducts Yoga and Meditation classes for all the students. An entrepreneurship cell is established in the Institute in association with IIT Madras to guide students who are interested in becoming entrepreneurs.

Student housing

Separate hostel facilities are available for both male and female students. The hostels can accommodate about 1000 male and 1500 female students. Additional accommodation for 300 male students is being constructed. All the hostels are Wi-Fi enabled for limited access. The facilities in the hostels include a stationery shop, infirmary and snacketeria.

KLUSO student organization

KLUSO is the student organization of KLU. It was inaugurated in March 12, 2010.[4] The KLUSO website lists 16 student clubs for different interests.

Industry Interaction

The Institute is a member of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The Institute has signed MoUs with national and multinational industries which allows the students to visit the industries to earn practical experience. The Institute has a strong Industrial Relations and Placements Department with offices in cities in India that oversee the industry-Institution interaction and placements.

Companies have established a "Virtual Industry" on campus which allow the students of the Institute to do the industry projects within the campus. Full semester industrial training is mandatory for the students through Practice School.

Accreditation

This university was given deemed status under u/s 3 of UGC Act 1956. It is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of UGC as ‘A’ Grade with a CGPA of 3.76 on a 4 point scale – this makes it the number 1 Private Engineering College in India as per CGPA. It is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, and accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). It is an ISO 9001 - 2000 Certified Institution, and has been autonomous since 2006.
