Vijay (Tamil: விஜய்), (full name is Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar born on June 22, 1974) is an Indian film actor. His mother tongue is Tamil. He began his career doing minor roles as a child artist in the Tamil cinema industry.He is a mass film hero who entertains people with his stereotype acting, dialogues, songs & dances, fights and other antics. |
==Personal background== |
Vijay has a son Jason Sanjay, born on August 26, 2000 in London. |
==Entry in films== |
Vijay has acted as a child actor in some of his father's films, got a break as a hero in his father's film "Naalaya Theerpu" which went unnoticed. But actor Vijayakanth , a close family friend of S.A.Chandrasekhar, helped Vijay by co-starring in a film called "Senthoorappandi". The same film helped Vijay to become popular in the interior areas of Tamil Nadu. Films like Rasigan, Vishnu, Deva followed, all helped to increase Vijay's star value among B and C classes. |
==A-grade promotion== |
1996 saw a blockbuster hit in the Vikraman-directed film "Poove Unakkaga" which helped Vijay to establish as a bankable star in Tamil Films. The same film gave him the mileage and image make over which Vijay was looking forward. Soon hit films followed one another with unorthodox climax like "Love Today", "Kadhalukku Mariyadhai" and "Priyamudan". |
==Rise to superstardom== |
1997 was a year that gave Vijay his all-record smashing hit "Kadhalukku Mariyadhai" which pushed Vijay to new heights. The film ran for 225 days and bagged him the Tamil Nadu's State award for Best Actor. Series of hits followed like "Ninaithen Vandhai" , "Priyamudan" and another blockbuster "Thullatha Manamum Thullum" which ran for 175 days. |
==Aftermath== |
Following "Thullatha Manamum Thullum", Vijay acted in "Endrendrum Kadhal", "Nenjinilae" and "Minsara Kanna", where all the 3 films flopped. His next venture the much awaited Fazil directed "Kannukkul Nilavu" was also a flop which disappointed his fans as well as Vijay. |
His next venture was "Kushi" which was a block-buster of 2000. Hits followed like "Priyamanavale", "Friends" and "Badri". His next string of films were "Shah Jahan", "Thamizhan", "Youth", "Bagavathi", "Vaseegara" and "Pudhiya Geethai"; Out of these "Shahjahan" and Youth were average grossers while "Thamizan", "Bagavathi", "Vaseegara" and "Pudhiya Geethai" didn't do well at the box office. |
==Rise to action hero== |
Thirumalai was a turning point in the career of Vijay as he donned a new look and went on to act in action movies thereafter. The film which released alongwith Bala's much acclaimed Pithamagan and Thirumalai was declared as a Blockbuster. The year 2004 was a major year of Vijay as his mega hit blockbuster film Ghilli was released. The film went to shatter all the records earning him the nickname Ghilli and made Vijay the undisputed numero uno among the Tamil film industry only after superstar Rajnikanth. The successful ventures made Vijay the minimum-guarantee hero amongst the film-makers. Notable films are Madurey,Thirupachi and Sivakasi. |
The following venture was Aathi which was a flop. Vijay didn't commit in any other projects until Prabhu Deva joined hands with Vijay and gave the blockbuster of 2007 Pokkiri, after a year from the release of "Aathi". The film was praised by all for his dynamic performance as an undercover cop. |
2008 started with new director Bharathan directed movie Azhagiya Tamil Magan which was an average grosser in Tamil Nadu, but was a hit in Kerala. But the film made a avg opening. |
His latest venture Kuruvi with Trisha as his pair and Dharani as director has opened in a big way to mixed reviews all over the world. The movie has been showing bad response and a very flop all over the world. |
Kerala is one of the major market of Vijay as he has a very large fan base there and his films gets tremendous opening on par with Mohan Lal and Mammootty films in Kerala. |
