The John Roan School is a comprehensive secondary school in Blackheath, South-East London and a member of The Beacon Schools program. It was originally two grammar schools. The boys' school was founded in 1677 and the girls' school in 1877 through a charitable endowment by John Roan who left a substantial amount in his last will and testament to those children of Greenwich who could not afford private education.

Notable former students

  • London BBC News Presenter Asad Ahmad.
  • Comedian Arthur Smith
  • Tv Sports Presenter Steve Rider
  • Footballer David Hillier
  • Former MTV Presenter Dave Berry
  • Terry Stark and Danielle Tiley

Location

Situated near the world-famous Greenwich Park where it has stood since the 1920's, the local council intends to relocate it to the Greenwich Peninsula, but has found itself facing growing local opposition [3]

The school is currently split over two campuses, Maze Hill and Westcombe Park named for the roads on which they lie. The former girls' school was in Devonshire Drive, Greenwich, was demolished when the boys' and girls' sites united.

Colleges

The school is split into colleges, named after famous and influential people from history students were initially placed randomly:

  • Hawking - named for the physicist Stephen Hawking, headed by Mr M Sayers.
  • King - named for Martin Luther King, headed by Mr M Baker
  • Teresa - named for Mother Teresa, headed by Ms J Hopkins.
  • Alfege - named for St Alfege, headed by Mr B Turner
  • Brasher - headed by Mr L Thomas
  • Demilew - headed by Ms A Melly

The move to switch from the Head of Year system to a House or College system was met with hostilty by the future Class of 2005[citation needed]. This was in part due to the fact that such a shift in system could potentially disrupt their final year of GCSEs, but mainly due to not wanted to be seperated from their head of year of 5 years[citation needed].

There has been much controversy as to whether in the future the students will be placed based on exam results, and teacher recommendation or student choice. Many feel it could lead to elitism within the school[citation needed].

Mascot

The school's mascot is "Jonny Bling" a pantomime reindeer[citation needed] acted by two members of the school which usually kept the same until one or both students can not continue (due to leaving the school or being too big to fit in the costume). Jonny has been spotted at numerous landmarks, such as Brighton Pier, the Royal Observatory and the School's Hope memorial Camp in Braithwaite, Cumbria to name but a few. All sightings have been immortalised on postcards.

Jonny Bling is rumoured to have been plotted against by the senior management of the school on several occasions, and indeed currently is said to fear for his life[citation needed].

Headteachers

Carl Dent succeeded Christopher Deane in 2001. There has been some controversy over Mr. Dent's leadership of the school. Carl Dent presided over two years of low GCSE results before an improvement in 2007[citation needed]. On the 21st December 2007 the Chair of the Governing Body announced that Carl Dent had 'moved on' and planned to use his skills and experiences in a different context to further improve the education of children[citation needed] The new Headteacher (interim for two terms) is Mr. Des Malone[citation needed].
