John Hersey High School, (Hersey or JHHS), is a public four-year high school located in Arlington Heights, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. Named after Hiroshima writer John Hersey, it is part of Township High School District 214, which also includes Buffalo Grove High School, Elk Grove High School, Prospect High School, Rolling Meadows High School, and Wheeling High School.

History

John Hersey High School is known as one of the few schools in the state that specifically caters to students with special needs. The hard of hearing population at JHHS is one of the largest in the area and well noted. Hersey also welcomed the MMI (Mildly Mentally Impaired) program, formerly housed at Wheeling High School, to its school in 2006. JHHS recently built a new fine arts and fitness section.[clarification needed (when?)]

A few scenes from the 2010 remake A Nightmare on Elm Street were filmed at Hersey in the first week of May 2009.[8]

Academics

In 2007, the average ACT score at Hersey for the graduating class was 24.1. [9] Hersey has made Adequate Yearly Progress on the Prairie State Achievement Examination, a state test that comprises a part of the No Child Left Behind Act.[10]

According to US News & World Report, Hersey is one of the top 30 schools in Illinois for the 2007-2008 school year. US News also states that 48.6% of 12th graders participate in AP classes.[11]

Feeder schools

Middle schools whose graduates usually attend Hersey include Thomas Middle School, Miner Junior High School, River Trails Middle School, and MacArthur Middle School. JHHS also receives students from several private schools such as St. Emily, St. Peter, and St. Alphonsus Ligouri.

Activities

Hersey High School won 1st place in the 2007 National Deaf Academic Bowl competition. In 2007, the Hersey Huskie Rugby Club went to the Tier II State Championship, but lost to the Morton Mustangs.

The Hersey Marching Huskies won the University of Illinois' field competition in 2006 and won the best overall award, the Governor's Trophy in 2009 [12]. The school's Symphonic Band was accepted to the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in the 2006-2007 school year.[citation needed] With a recording from this performance, the band was accepted to the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic held annually in Downtown Chicago where bands from across the nation, and internationally perform. Fresh from that performance, they received the title of "Honor Band" from the University of Illinois Superstate Band Festival.[citation needed] The Band also recently received the Sudler Flag of Honor from the John Philip Sousa Foundation, for its "particularly significant high standards of excellence in music over several years". They are to play in the Rigotti Reeds Festival in France in summer, 2009.[citation needed]

The JHHS Robotics Team placed 5th at the 2005-2006 and 9th at the 2006-2007 BattleBots IQ competitions (now known as BotsIQ).[citation needed]

Athletics

Hersey HS competes in the Mid-Suburban League (MSL) East Division. JHHS is also a member of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), which governs most interscholastic athletic and competitive activities in Illinois. Teams from Hersey are stylized as the Huskies.

The school sponsors interscholastic teams from both young men and women in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and water polo. Young men may compete in baseball, football, and wrestling, while young women may compete in badminton, bowling, cheerleading, and softball. While not sponsored by the IHSA, the school's athletic department also supervises athletes involved in the Special Olympics.[13]

  • Gymnastics (girls): 3rd place (1976-77); 2nd place (1981-82); State Champions (1983-84)
  • Tennis (boys): 4th place (1987-88)
  • Tennis (girls): 4th place (1989-90, 94-95); 2nd place (1995-96)
  • Volleyball (boys): 2nd place (2002-03)
  • Volleyball (girls): 4th place (1997-98); 3rd place (1993-94); 2nd place (1988-89)
  • Wrestling: State Champions (1970-71, 71-72)

John Hersey High School, also co–hosts the Illinois High School Association State Tennis Tournaments for boys and girls.
