Angelo Acosta (born December 15, 2001) is a Filipino rapper, singer-songwriter and television personality.[1][2]
Early and personal life
[edit]Acosta was born on December 15, 2001, in Quezon City, Philippines. He has an older sibling; their father, who was a cop in Manila was shot and killed on duty when they were kids and their mother had to raise them on her own.[3]At age 12, he began writing songs and participating in rap battles.[3][2]
Career
[edit]In 2015, he released "Muling Umusad" (lit. Start Over Again) in SoundCloud, as a thirteen-year-old.[4] In 2018, he released "Swerte" on Bandcamp.[5]
In 2020, Acosta participated in the blind auditions of the second season of The Voice Teens & sang Shanti Dope's hit "Nadarang", he got two-chair turns with Bamboo and apl.de.ap turning. He picked the latter as his coach.[6] He was the first hip-hop artist picked across all seasons of the show. He was eliminated in the Battles.[7]
In 2022, his track "Don't Mess With My Christmas" was selected by Randy Jackson, Mike Posner and Joel Madden as one of the seven finalists among thousands of entries in the international songwriting competition, "MerryModz $100K XMas Song Contest" by media mogul Tom Bilyeu.[8]
Influences
[edit]On a radio interview, Acosta said that he "grew up listening" to Bruno Mars and Gloc-9 as an eight-year-old[2] before discovering Frank Ocean, Daniel Caesar and Mac Miller. Other artists Acosta has said that inspired his work include Drake, and apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas, who mentored him.[2]
