January Thompson (born January 28, 1988) is an electronic artist, singer, composer, producer and performer.
Biography
[edit]January Thompson is a California born, singer songwriter. She is known for her signature sound of echoing vocals, luxurious and uplifting, giving her music an undeniably spiritual warmth. Her original approach to lyrics through metaphor cocooned with analogue synths made her a pioneer among electronic singer songwriters.
Career
[edit]Her 2018 release album 'W h e l m e d' was produced by "Bliss" Denmark. It is a combination of Smart production, masterful arrangements, and a willingness to follow melody and tune above and beyond genre or format. The music is all soft and tender with an extreme aesthetic discipline. Her songs melt inextricably into each other with a sonic palette of synth oscillations and atmospheric reverb, advancing and receding within them like shadows. Percussion is employed sparingly as the rhythm is organized into the subtlest of beats that collide gently against the classical instrumentation and the tender strings played by the Copenhagen Cello Quartet in a way that seems to clarify each. The sparse backing allows Januarys distinctly rich and emotive vocals to create warmth and sweetness while the vocal overdubs create an echoing, almost haunting feeling via lyrics that tell a longing for love and togetherness and intertwine metaphor and the process of human relationship to the world and each other providing layer upon layer of luxurious, uplifting, undeniably spiritual warmth. Magnificent, in every sense."
Her 2020 release Kintsugi defines January's signature sound which was further developed by her continued musical partnership with producer, grammy nominated Matt Robertson, who’s skills are as diverse as the artists he works with (musical director for Björk, The Cinematic Orchestra) . "Her songs are cocooned with analogue synths, programming and arranging them into perfection, creating something truly unique, sounding only like January."
