Jampur (جام پور) is a small city located at 29°38'32" N , 70°35'45"E[1] in Rajanpur District, south of Dera Ghazi Khan, in the centre of Pakistan.[2] It comprises an area of about 8-10 square kilometres and has a population of almost 1,20,000.

History

Jampur' is believed to have a long history. Evidence includes Dalo Ra-oy ka theer from which antiques for more than 2340 years old were found when the great Alexander the Greek had a decision to conquer the whole world came here he was greatly impressed and inspired by the beauty of Queen Rukhsana, then according to the legend, he married her. A well-known beauty soap by the multi-national company "Unilever" is named after her.

The main market of tobacco is situated here. The main crops of jampur are cotton, wheat, sugarcane and tobacco.

When the Halooko khan & Chengez khan arrived here to conquer here, then Bhuds & then families like Arain, they called "JAM" were settled here for its land was famous for its fertility. Centuries ago, Jampur was known as "Jadampur", when the population increased it became known as Jampur.

Most people of Jampur are related to agriculture directly or indirectly. Main market/City centre of Jampur is called " SADAR BAZAR" which is very old market, while old city is situated at 15-20 Feet height then new city in order to save it from water flood rising from Indus river in old days when it use to flow near Jampur. Main road of old city is known as "Circular Road" that us to have 10 Daras (Gates) to collect tax from peasants and merchants while they use to bring their goods and commodities inside the Jampur. Part of that money was to go in the government's treasury while rest of the money was spent on the welfare of Jampur like construction and re-construction of roads/streets and the sanitary system.

Jampur is becoming the "Information technology Hub" in the southern Punjab, it has a very big computer market and majority of people including male and female are computer literate. The city is also famous for its beautiful engraved wooden work. Local language of Jampur was Seraiki, which is now becoming extinct because new generations prefer to talk in Urdu, English or in a mixture of Urdu and English called "Urduish". In august 2010 jampur was devastated by a large flood in the indus river. the whole city was affected by the flood. near about 95% people had to leave their houses. Some govt buildings were saved so people had to live in camps arranged in these buildings i.e govt boys high school & govt girls high school no 1. All the infra structure of the city was ruined. govt. boys college & govt. girls college were completely destroyed. The ptcl exchange was destroyed so the city was disconnected with the world because internet was vanished. the electricity was not available for a month. The city hospital was filled with water so it had to shift temporarily in govt boys high school. The academic year of the educational institutes was badly affected. all the crops were destroyed. because the economy of city is based upon crops so that was the worst economic set back to the city. according to UN JAMPUR & kot addu were the most affected cities of Pakistan in the flood of 2010. all the govt officials i.e President of Pakistan, governor Punjab, CM Punjab visited the city. the general secretory of UN ( BAN Ki MOON ) & an american senator also visited the city. The history says that it was the worst disaster that the 2500 year old city had ever had.

Language

Saraiki is the local Language of the city. However Urdu is Also spoken in the region. Most popular Saraiki poets of Jampur is Mr. Malik Ghulam Rasool Deda(Late), Abdul Hameed Zaok (Late), Abdul Hafeez Bhashani (Late) and Mr.Abdul Qayyum Amil.The typical (theeth) saraiki is also spoken in the village areas of jampur.


Distinguished Jampurian

Jampur has produced severals world renowed scientist and doctors as Dr. Abdulullah, Dr. Shoukat Parvez and Dr. Ashiq Hussain. Dr. Parvez did Ph.D. in 1987 under UNESCO fellowship from Prague. He was awarded and completed three Post Doctoral under UNIDO Trieste, Italy, Kyung-Hee University Seoul, Republic of S. Korea and Biotec Thailand. He completed seveal International Professional Courses/Trainings from various countries and Advance Management Course; like Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Thailand and S. Korea so on. He was also awarded with the Certificate of Excellence and Appreciation from the Director R&D and Dean Kyung-Hee University S. Korea. He has eight (approved) Industrial international patents.

He served as a head of Industrial Biotechnology Division at NIBGE, Faisalabad, Director (Agriculture & Biotechnology) and Director (Technical) at PAEC Head office Islamabad. He won eleven Academic Awards/ Honors. Dr. Shoukat Parvez has been appointed as a Chairman PCSIR BPS-22 Islamabad on October 18, 2010. He published several research articles in reputed international journals.

Dr.Khalil Ahmed Bhutta, a medical doctor by profession got second position in Central Superior Service (CSS)and joined police department. He is currrently serving as ASP in Islamabad.

Educational institutions

Jampur is rather sparsely populated and has little industry, though the land is very fertile. One of its most famous educational institutions is the Govt. Boys High School, Jampur which was founded in 1935, as a consequence of the introduction of the British Government system in 1857. Jampur has two public girls high schools for education up to 10th class. The city has one public college for boys and one for Girls.

Jampur has set a trend of producing best Doctors, Engineers, Chartered accountants and other professionals every year. This land is considered to be very rich by educational perspective Where Literacy Rate is up to 80%. Jampur has a commerce college playing an important role in the development of professional education in Jampur. The college is located a bit far from the city in the eastern site. It has many private schools and academies for education i.e. Hira Science Academy, Super Science Academy, Al-kamal Higher Secondary College and Hira high school which has its branchse all over pakistan. All of them are playing their role in educational awareness of the city. Dr. Shoukat Parvez has taken over charge of chairman pcsir on octobar 18, 2010. Professors Academy has now been established in Jampur and it has shown splendid performance this year in F.Sc first part examination held in 2009-2010. In 2004 a student named Farrukh Abbas topped whole Punjab in F.Sc examination and got presidential award by General Pervez Musharraf and now he is a graduate of King Edward Medical University Lahore. He was also awarded by Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Medical facilities

Jampur has Tehsil Headquarter Hospital and many private clinics where specialised doctors serve. In T.H.Q hospital all medical facilities are available. 20 ambulance is also available for emergency measures.

A branch of Agha Khan laboratories is functioning in the city since July 2008. A special center for Rod kohi victims has been established in the city. Another hospital namely Sahar Hospital is also working in Jampur. It contains all basic medical facilities. No welfare organization as Edhi, Cheepa etc has its office in the city.

Popularity

Jampur city is mostly famous for carvings on pens. People like to give the carved writing pens as gift to others in the country and abroad as well. It is a classic art invented in jampur for the very first time.

Wodden work of jampur is also famous. Jampuri chaarpai is famous for its thick and designed pillers.

Jampuri Cotton and tobacco crops are also famous through out Pakistan.

Jampur has a large Pesticides markete which is considered to be the biggest net online markete in Pakistan.

Jampur also has mobile and motorbikes markets. Motorcycle showrooms have been opened here.

Agriculture

The land of jampur is very fertile in this regard. Cotton, maize, sorghum, bajra, wheat & tobacco are generally produced here in Jampur. There are a lot of Cotton factories in Jampur. Tobacco is generally exported to NWFP. Different Vegetables are also grown here. Mangoes and dates are famous fruits of this region.Production of tobacco in jampur is anuulay worth of Rs 5 billion.
