"I Stay in Love"
Song

"I Stay in Love" is a song written by Mariah Carey, Bryan-Michael Cox, Kendrick "Wyldcard" Dean, and Adonis Shropshire for Carey's eleventh studio album, E=MC². Produced by Carey and Cox, it was released as the album's fourth overall single. The song was performed at the American Music Awards on November 23rd, 2008. The song has been played over 2 million times on Carey's official MySpace.[1]

Release

"I Stay in Love" went for adds at U.S. Top 40/Mainstream and Rhythm/Crossover radio on October 28, 2008[2] and has since been released digitally.

Critical reception

Critical reviews of the song were mostly positive. In its review of E=MC², The online edition of The Republican said that Carey "shines" on the song[3], while Fox News described it as "a killer ballad".[4] People named it the best ballad on the album, calling it "pretty".[5] The Houston Chronicle described the single as a "gently grooving ballad that Janet Jackson should be recording" and that "Carey effortlessly hits [the notes] at the end of the song".[6].The Los Angeles Times gave the song a mixed review, stating that "I Stay in Love" was "unadorned, and her voice is almost leathery in the lower notes. It's not flattering, but it rings true emotionally."[7] Entertainment Weekly said the song is "a slower, less addictive variation on "We Belong Together".[8]

Promotion

Carey performed the song live on UK show The X Factor (the basis for American Idol) on November 8, 2008, along with a performance of "Hero" with the show's contestants. She also performed the song at the American Music Awards on November 23, 2008 at the Nokia Theatre.[9] [10] Carey will perform the song at "The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!", a show that announces the Grammy Nominations. The show will take place at the Nokia Theatre on December 3 and will be aired live. [11]
