The warden reveals herself to be the granddaughter of Trout Walker, as he had made her spend her entire childhood searching for the treasure. The boys are saved by their massive consumption of onions, which the lizards hate the smell of, so the protection buys them enough time for a surprise visit from Stanley's attorney Rita Morengo, who arrives with the Texas Attorney General.

Holes is a 2003 comedy drama film based on the Louis Sachar novel of the same name. The film was produced by Walden Media and released by Walt Disney Pictures.

Plot

The story begins at a juvenile detention facility called Camp Green lake, where delinquent boys are sent to "build up their character." Stanley Yelnats IV, an only child with an alleged family curse, has been wrongly accused of stealing baseball player Clyde Livingston's shoes from a charity auction. Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake for his punishment. There, he discovers the warden of the camp is not interested in building the boys' character, but instead is searching for a buried treasure, which has been lost for decades. Stanley makes this discovery after digging up an unidentified golden tube, and observing the warden's reaction to seeing it. A flashback shows how outlaw Kissin' Kate Barlow got her name and how Stanley Yelnats I had his hidden treasure robbed by her.

Back in present day, Zero runs away after Dr. Pendanski insults him of his inability to read and write. Stanley, Zero's only friend, also runs away to find him, worried about his chances of surviving the harsh desert. Stanley finds Zero in an abandoned rowboat and sees a gigantic mountain converted into what looks like a thumb. He recalls the story of his great-grandfather getting robbed by Kissin' Kate, and how he survived by “finding refuge off God's thumb”. When they finally reach the Big Thumb, Zero passes out. Stanley uncovers a field of onions and groundwater, which the boys eat to regain their strength. Stanley sings to Zero the lullaby he was taught, and since Zero is a descendant of Madame Zeroni - the gypsy who cursed the Yelnats family- the curse breaks.

The boys eventually return to Camp Green Lake and, while digging a hole near the one in which Stanley unearthed what he believed to be part of Katherine's lipstick containers, (the afore-mentioned golden tube,) they find an old treasure chest. But before they can leave, they are surrounded not only by deadly yellow-spotted lizards, but also by the harsh warden, Mr. Pendanski and Mr. Sir, who all wait for the boys to die from a lizard's bite in order to take hold of the treasure.

Zero reveals the treasure chest has Stanley's name on it. It turns out that Kissin' Kate's treasure was actually Stanley Yelnats I's treasure (jewels, deeds, stocks), which rightfully belongs to Stanley and his family. One of the deputies recognizes Mr. Sir as a wanted criminal. It is also learned that Dr. Pendanski is not a doctor at all. The Attorney General orders the arrests of Miss Walker, Mr. Sevillo, and Dr. Pendanski on the charges of misprison of felony and perverting the course of justice. Stanley uses half the bonds to get a new house for his family, and gives the other half to Zero to help him hire a team of investigators to find his missing mother.

In a final scene, Clyde Livingston, along with the Yelnats, Zeronis and their friends, celebrate the success of Stanley's father's foot-odor perfume, named Sploosh. Camp Green Lake, after receiving torrential rains for the first time in decades, is turned into a Girl Scouts Camp.
