'''Hoboe''' are an American rock group formed in 2000. Their music is characterized by the lyrics, vocals and oboe work of Zen Ben, who has led the band since its founding, and four other members who have taken on permanent roles with the band since 2007. The featuring of an amplified oboe in a lead performance role of a rock group is their most distinguishing characteristic, and their sound draws from multiple influences including blues, jazz, classical, metal, folk, punk, grunge and psychedelia.

===2000-2007: experimental years===
Zen Ben has played every Hoboe gig since the outfit's debut on Feb. 19, 2000. From 2000-2007, with a constantly rotating lineup, over 40 musicians had performed with Hoboe and it had never performed as the same band twice. During this period, performing Hoboe musicians were drawn heavily from the Portland, Maine jamband, folk and jazz scenes, each with their own distinguishing sound. The constantly varying lineups and consequently diverging band sounds required of Zen Ben an ability to adapt to playing diverse ranges of musical styles.

===2008-2009: birth of a band===
By 2008, Hoboe began to solidify themselves as a permanent band with steady members Bob Bergeron (bass) joining in December, 2007, Thom Metz (guitar) joining in February, 2008 and Jon Bangs (drums) joining in September, 2008. Each contributed their talent to help develop a distinctive oboe-rock sound fronted by oboist Zen Ben. Hoboe's sound notably shifted in a new direction during this period, adopting more heavy and hard rock characteristics, sometimes touching upon metal or punk. Although jazz and jam elements did remain, they were much less apparent. In 2009, Hoboe began working on its debut CD which will be released later this year, including five songs written by Zen Ben and two songs written and sung by Bob Bergeron. Hoboe toured both New Jersey and Philadelphia in spring of 2009, meeting up for a second shared billing with their friends The Doughboys for one of the shows. Drummer Jon Bangs began to explore playing the trumpet and the drums simultaneously, a feature of Hoboe's sound that continues to become increasingly more prominent. Metz began writing songs for the band, and all members began collaborating together on songwriting. In August, 2009, Bergeron resigned and 19-year old Ben Holt was reigned in as Hoboe's new bassist. In December, 2009, Hoboe released its debut single "I'm Your Man/Charlie" containing one song each by Zen Ben and Bergeron.

===Theatrics===
[[it:Hoboe]]
By 2008, Hoboe had begun develop a reputation for their live shows because of their use of bizarre and unique theatrical elements. Zen Ben began to frequently wear more and more feminine garb (tights, skirts and dresses) underneath layers of other costumes that he would gradually strip off garment by garment during a performance until revealing the "woman" inside. This feminine persona was coined as "Zennifer" by their fans, and her appearances with the band are unpredictable. Increasingly, Hoboe began to use more props and performance themes at their shows, including the use of a large-sized "clam" out of which their appeared a beautiful "pearl" dancer, a self-inflating scorpion, glow-in-the dark hula hoop dancers, a staged shootout, and a flying robot. Metz and Bangs have also begun adorning unusual costume wear.
