The Heart Attack Grill® is a hospital themed restaurant in Chandler Arizona, which has become internationally famous for embracing and promoting an unhealthy diet of incredibly large hamburgers. Customers are referred to as "patients," orders as "prescriptions," and the waitresses as "nurses."

History

Founded in December of 2005 by Dr. Jon, a non AMA recognized physician opened the first Heart Attack Grill in Tempe, Arizona. He has been glorified as the freedom fighting arch enemy of political correctness by some, and demonized as a charlatan "nutritional pornographer" by others, Dr. Jon can be found each day, at the griddle, actually flipping hamburgers in his white doctor's lab coat and stethoscope. The Heart Attack Grill today is located in Chandler, Arizona and has taken an interesting turn from its humble start in Tempe. With only one Heart Attack Grill in existence it is has captured the entire world’s attention.

The Menu

The Heart Attack Grill menu is based on simplicity. The food menu consists of hamburgers (Bypass Burgers) and French fries (Flatliner Fries). The following is the complete menu: Single Bypass = 1 half pound beef patty with 2 slices of American cheese. Double Bypass = 2 half pound beef patties with 4 slices of American cheese. Triple Bypass = 3 half pound beef patties with 6 slices of American cheese. Quadruple Bypass = 4 half pound beef patties with 8 slices of American cheese. Note: Bypass burgers can be ordered with no cheese. Unlimited French Fry Bar = Serves Flatliner Fries which are cooked in pure lard.

BEVERAGES In keeping with the simple menu the beverage list is just as simple, pure sugar Coke, bottled water, Budweiser and Corona. The Heart Attack Grill also carries a variety tequila and frozen margaritas.

CONDIMENTS Available condiments include fresh sliced tomatoes, pickles and onions. For the people that like it hotter, sliced jalapeños. Ketchup, Mustard and Mayonnaise is also available. The Bypass burgers are served with cheese only. It is up to the customers (patients) to decide what they want on their Bypass Burger. Two condiments that will never be on the list include lettuce and bacon. Lettuce in today’s society has become the poster child for healthy eating. Dr. Jon has found that lettuce adds nothing to the caloric balance of the Bypass Burger. Bacon will never be on the list for main reason that it is already there. All of the buns take a quick bath in pure lard (pork fat) which gives the Bypass Burgers their special taste.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE BYPASS BURGER The Heart Attack Grill has always strived to be on the cutting edge of efficiency and taste. Over the years the Bypass burger has been prepared many different ways. The original method started on an iron griddle. This system work great, however there was still much to be explored in the way a Bypass burger could be prepared. Next it was decided the best way would be grilling the burgers over mesquite charcoal. This method looked great to the patients however the charcoal was extremely messy and the burgers lost too much of their fat content. Then for a short time the Bypass burgers were slow smoked with wood. This system produced a great burger however the general public thought it was too different from the burger they have come to know and love. The current and best method for the grill is all bypass burgers are cooked on a flat iron griddle (back to the original method). This method produces the best burgers the Heart Attack Grill has ever made. You will often find one of the nursing staff (server/cook) or Dr. Jon preparing Bypass Burgers at the griddle.

Controversy

The Nursing Board The Heart Attack Grill has always been surrounded with controversy. A group from a nursing board started a campaign to shut down the Heart Attack Grill. You would think a nursing board’s main concern would be the health and welfare of people, therefore would have been campaigning about the high calorie food being served. Instead they filed a complaint with the Arizona Attorney Generals office because the waitress staff dress as nurses. This is a quote from one of the Center of Nursing Advocacy Boards letters, “The idea that the Grill's usage of the word "nurse" violates Arizona's protected title statute is certainly an interesting one. There is a real risk that some people who wrongly identify themselves as "nurses" will mislead the public, threatening public health and undermining the nursing profession, even outside of the traditional clinical settings. One distressing example is the recent growth of infant caregivers with little or no health training who market themselves as "baby nurses." That dangerous trend appears to have played a role in New York State's recent passage of a protected title statute for nurses. For us, the real problem with the Heart Attack Grill "nurses" is not so much that many people are likely to think they are really nurses. But constantly linking powerful sexual images so closely to the profession of nursing--to even the fantasy idea that working nurses are sexually available to patients--reinforces long-standing stereotypes about nursing. Those stereotypes continue to discourage practicing and potential nurses, encourage sexual violence, and lessen respect for nursing. When you combine this lack of respect, the intense college-level training nursing actually requires, and the difficulty and stress of nursing practice, it is no surprise that the profession remains in the midst of a global shortage driven by rampant short-staffing.” The Heart Attack grill is still to this day using the title “nurses” for waitresses, however the word “nurse” always is followed with an “*”. Stating the Arizona State Law Requires Us To Inform You That The Women Who Work At The Heart Attack Grill Are Not Actually Nurses And Do Not Have Any Real Medical Training.

350 Pound or more program. In the beginning of 2009 the Heart Attack Grill unveiled a new program. If you weigh more than 350 pounds you eat for free! If a person thinks he or she is close to the target weight they must get on a scale in the restaurant first. If you are 350 pounds or over you eat for free. If the patient wants a second Bypass Burger in the same visit they must get on the scale again. This program has also got the attention of the media and other organizations.

Advertising

One rule Dr. Jon has implemented over the years is that he will never pay for advertising. A rule that has worked great for the Heart Attack Grill so far. With all the controversy surrounding the grill, Dr. Jon has had more FREE media coverage than he could handle. The Heart Attack Grill has been featured on the Food network, Travel Channel, ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX networks and shows such as Dateline, The Doctors, Rachel Ray, Geraldo and Good Morning America. Around the world the Heart Attack Grill has been featured on French, German, United Kingdom, Japan, China and Australia television networks. The publicity around the world makes the Heart Attack Grill on of the most popular restaurants in the world or at least one of the most talked about.
