Hazel Levesque

Hazel Levesque is one of the protagonists in Rick Riordan‘s book series, The Heroes of Olympus. A daughter of Pluto, she was brought to Camp Jupiter by her half-brother Nico di Angelo.

History

A daughter of Pluto, born in 1929 and lived in New Orleans. Her mother, Queen Marie, in a spirit ritual, who summoned Pluto and asked for the riches of the earth. When Hazel was born, she was able to find precious metals and gems. They appeared most when she is nervous or under pressure. On Hazel's thirteenth birthday, Gaea, in yet another spirit ritual of Queen Marie's, persuaded her to leave New Orleans and come to Alaska. Hazel was tricked into raising Alcyoneus there by Gaea and died in 1942 stopping him from rising. In the Underworld, when she is judged, she is told that if she hadn't died, she would have grown up and married Sammy, her childhood friend and boyfriend (he is now known to be Leo Valdez's ansestor). Instead of going to Elysium, and her mother going to Eternal Punishment, she begs the judges to let both her and Queen Marie go to he Fields of Asphodel. Nico di Angelo rescued her from the Fields of Asphodel, giving her a second chance at life. Nico takes her to Camp Jupiter, where she was officially claimed by Pluto and joined the Fifth Cohort. She became a legionnaire when she stopped a unicorn herd from trampling Dakota. Hazel was known to have "blackouts," where she appears to go into a deep sleep, when in realty, she is reliving a moment of her past. They stop when Frank goes with Hazel on one of her blackouts, reliving her judgement, her time in Asphodel, and when Nico found her.

We are introduced to Hazel in the second chapter of The Son of Neptune, when she is standing guard at the entrance to Camp Jupiter along with Frank Zhang.

Personality

Hazel is bright and outgoing with a love for creativity and horseback riding (she tamed Arion- a feat not even the Amazons could do) but has a dislike for boating and curses.

Romance

Hazel's boyfriend is Frank Zhang, a descendent of Poseidon and a son of Mars. It is described that, in the beginning of the book, that "Hazel's heart did a little two-step." Hazel kissed him toward the end of the Son of Neptune.

Hazel's first boyfriend was Sammy Valdez, a childhood friend from New Orleans. It was stated by the judges of the Underworld, that if Hazel had survived, she would have married him. Hazel states that it wouldn't have taken much to make her bitter like her mother. Gaea tells her that Sammy eventually grew up, married, and moved to Texas.

Family

Hazel is a demigod, daughter of Pluto (the Roman form of Hades), the god of the dead and wealth, and a mortal named Marie Levesque. Marie was a fortune teller living in New Orleans before World War Two. She does not make a physical appearance during the books, only being remembered by Hazel in flashbacks. Nico di Angelo and Bianca di Angelo are her half siblings on the godly side, been the children of Pluto in his Greek form.

Physical Appearance

Hazel is described as having long, curly brown hair and golden eyes which look like fourteen karat gold.
