Hawk Tuah is a phrase from a viral video posted in 2024, in which during an interview, Haliey Welch[a] (/ˈhli/; born 2002 or 2003)[2] used the catchphrase, "hawk tuah", an apparent onomatopoeia for expectoration on a man's penis during oral sex.[3] She has since become known as the Hawk Tuah Girl.

On June 11, 2024, a man on the street YouTube channel, Tim & Dee TV, released a video featuring an interview with Haliey Welch in the Broadway district of Nashville, Tennessee.[4] During the video, she was asked a series of not-safe-for-work questions including, "What’s one move in bed that makes a man go crazy every time?" Welch's reply, using her Southern accent, was, "You gotta give 'em that 'hawk tuah' and spit on that thang," referring to spitting on a man's penis during oral sex.[5][2][6] The original video went viral, receiving millions of views across TikTok and Instagram, spawning remixes and remakes of the original audio, and gaining Welch the nickname Hawk Tuah Girl.[7]

Aftermath

Wanting to capitalize on the viral video, Welch partnered with a local apparel brand to begin selling Hawk Tuah merchandise, selling over $65,000 worth of it within a couple of weeks.[8][9] Because of her newfound internet fame, she quit her job at a mattress spring factory in order to pursue other ventures in social media.[10] On July 2, 2024, Welch signed for representation with The Penthouse.[11][12] The same day, Welch launched Instagram and TikTok accounts, amassing over 100,000 followers on Instagram in the span of one day.[13][unreliable source?] The following day, July 3, she established her own company, 16 Minutes, whose name is a play on the phrase "15 minutes of fame".[14][15] Welch also filed for trademarks in apparel and entertainment for her catchphrase.[16][unreliable source?][17][unreliable source?]

On June 29, 2024, Welch joined Zach Bryan on stage during his concert in Nashville, Tennessee, to perform Bryan's song "Revival".[18] A few days later, Welch joined Shaquille O'Neal during his DJ set in Nashville.[19] During a baseball game between the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals, Braves play-by-play announcer Brandon Gaudin used Welch's "hawk tuah" quip during a live broadcast.[20][unreliable source?] Welch has appeared on the Club Random podcast[21] hosted by Bill Maher and also Whitney Cummings' Good for You[22] podcast.[23][24]

Welch had her first paid appearance at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood in Florida on July 13, 2024. The Hollywood Reporter has said her appearance fee is US$20,000.[25] Other news outlets have reported that her appearance fee is US$30,000.[26][27]

On July 12, 2024, Welch posted a video that showed her purchasing various animal care products from a PetSmart store and donating them to an animal shelter that was nearby with the song "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton playing in the background. In the video, she also showed a dog named "Blondie" that was in the shelter for 130 days, saying that the dog needed to be adopted.[28][29] After the video was released to the public, Rolling Stone called her a "charming Gen Z Dolly Parton".[29]

On August 15, 2024, Welch threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a New York Mets game in Citi Field.[30] The club received some pushback for inviting Welch from fans. She later in her video post explained that she went there to spread awareness and donate to America’s VetDogs.[31]

On August 31, 2024, Welch played in a Celebrity Poker Tour (CPT) Invitational IV hosted by PokerGO with other celebrities like Ethan Klein.[32]

On September 3, 2024, Welch and betr media announced the launch of her first podcast entitled Talk Tuah with Haliey Welch.[33][34]
