Gamescom is a new European trade fair for interactive games and entertainment organized by the Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware (BIU). The BIU (German Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software) represents 13 major video game companies such as Activision, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. It will be first held from 19 to 23 August 2009 in Cologne, Germany at the Cologne Trade Fair Center (Köln Messe). More than 300 exhibitors from 25 countries have signed up for the new trade show and various game editors have announced their intention to unveil new products during the event. It is the European equivalent of E3 in Los Angeles and Tokyo Game Show in Japan. It is used by many video game developers to show off their upcoming games and game-related hardware.[1][2][3][4]

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe press conference was on Tuesday 18 August. Their lineup for the show included highly acclaimed exclusives Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, God of War III, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Gran Turismo 5 and MAG. Along with announcements for applications such as PlayStation Home, VidZone and the PlayStation Store. They are also showing the new PSP Go hardware along with its new catalogue of games.[5]

Electronic Arts also had their press conference on the 18th, showing their major franchises such as Dante's Inferno, FIFA 10, Mass Effect 2, Need for Speed: Shift, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Spore Hero. Bioware will be with EA to show their upcoming role-playing game Dragon Age: Origins and for the first time ever, a public live demo of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Plus, EA will be holding a producer demo of The Sims 3: World Adventures

Activision Blizzard were also in attendance displaying long time Activision franchises Modern Warfare 2, Guitar Hero 5, DJ Hero and Tony Hawk: Ride. Blizzard Entertainment confirmed that they will be attending the show. Their booth will feature hands-on gameplay with their upcoming games StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and Diablo III. Also, Blizzard recruiters will be present to answer questions about recruitment and working for the company.[6]

Square Enix were also at Gamescom showing much anticipated Final Fantasy XIII. Along with Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Supreme Commander 2 and Final Fantasy XIV. [7]

Namco Bandai were in at Cologne showcasing Tekken 6, Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, Katamari Forever and various Wii titles. [8]

Capcom headlined their Gamescom appearance with Lost Planet 2. They also have in attendance Monster Hunter 3, Spyborgs and Dark Void. [9]

Konami had their conference of on the 19th of August showcasing Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. With Hideo Kojima covering the PSP exclusive Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. [10]

Announcements

At Sony Computer Entertainments conference a number of hardware and software related products were announced this included a new model Sony's new PlayStation 3 'Slim' . Also the PSP and PSP Go is getting its own version of the App Store, but on the PlayStation Network, by the name of Minis - The PSP 3000 is also getting 3 new colors. Also SCEE announced firmware update 3.0 with improvements of the Xross Media Bar and its System Software. Digital Comics was also unveiled launching in December. For European users the PlayStation Video Store will launch in November. In Addition the BBC iPlayer is to be made available to UK users. As well as other VoD channels available to other countries in the future.

The Microsoft conference was on a much smaller scale compared to Sony's the only announcement was Fable II episodic content and Fable III.

CCP Games unveiled Dust 514, a first-person shooter MMO with real time strategy elements for consoles. Funcom revealed the first expansion pack for Age of Conan, dubbed Rise of the Godslayer.

Sony PlayStation 3 Slim

Following speculation that a 'Slim' edition was in the pipeline, Sony officially announced the PlayStation 3 Slim on August 18, 2009. It will feature a 120GB hard drive and is 33% smaller and 36% lighter. It is currently priced at $299/€299, and while no official release date for each region has been announced, Sony predicts it will be released in all regions by September 1, 2009. [12]

Media Coverage

Another note for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is that they are showing their press conference in their online community-based service PlayStation Home in an event space called the Presentation Podium. [13]. They are also making their conference available on the PlayStation Store after the event. Parts of the event are available now. Many of the major gaming websites will be covering Gamescom extensively with live blogs of the conferences, interviews and hands on with the new software available. [11]

Game Developers Conference Europe

The 2009 Game Developers Conference Europe (GDC Europe), a European spinoff of the Game Developers Conference, will be held in conjunction with the Gamescom and will take place from 17 to 19 August 2009 at the Cologne Congress Center East. 130 speakers, 40 exhibitors, and 160 media representatives are expected to attend the conference.[14]
