The wisent also known as European bison is the heaviest surviving land animal in Europe. A typical wisent is about 9.5 feet long, 5.9-7.4 feet tall and weighs 300-920 kg.In the past they were killed to produces hides (animal skin for human use) and drinking vessels, which ultimately led to inclusion of its name in the endangered species list.
About 2000 years ago, wisent lived not only in forests but also roamed grasslands. They became extinct in Northern Europe in 11th century except in Ardennes where they lasted till 14th century. Last wisent died in 1790 in Transylvania.
Wisents were reintroduced successfully in 1951. They are now highly vulnerable to the foot and mouth diseases due to limited genetic pool. Wisents are now found in the 30km exclusion zone around Chernobyl.
