File talk:Bark black oak 8771.jpg
Appearance
I can't say for certain, but I very much doubt that the photo is of a black oak (despite the nice label). It doesn't look like an oak at all, at least not a red-oak group. The light-colored, peeling plates look a bit like sugar maple, and nothing at all like the tight, usually blackish, bark of most black oaks. The lower trunks usually are also divided crosswise into 1 or 2 inch blocky segments.
Anyone else suspicious? At the least it is a photo of an atypical black oak, and not a good example.
